Written in the 1890’s, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a story which represents many social problems that woman in the late 1800’s faced. By using a first person point of view, she conveys a message that showed how women suffered from oppressive power that many men used on women. This story describes the narrator as a sick, mildly depressed woman, who is prescribed by her husband who is a physician to “rest” cure. As she rests in her room, she begins to endlessly stare at the yellow wallpaper, and begins seeing things within the pattern. The ending of this story is really interesting because as the wallpaper was making the narrator insane it also helped her to get free from John’s control. Some may say that is a happy ending since she is free. That is the case, but she also lost complete control of her mind. This is shown when John comes in and Jane says, “I’ve got out at last,” said I, “in spite of you and Jane. And I’ve pulled off most of the paper, so you can’t put me back!”(Gillman 483). We can infer that she has lost complete control and switched spots with the person in the wallpaper who was behind the bars as she was ripping the wallpaper piece by piece. This shows that she can never be normal and is now just a formless figure. In The Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator weaves a tale of a woman with deep seeded feelings of depression. Her husband, a physician, takes her to a house for a span of three months where he puts her in a room to recuperate. That “recuperation” becomes her nemesis. She is so fixated on the “yellow wallpaper” that it seems to serve as the definition of her bondage. She gradually over time begins to realize what the wallpaper seems to represents and goes about plotting ways to overcome it. In a discussion concerning the wallpaper she states, “If only that top pattern could be gotten off from the under one! I mean to try it, little by little.” “There are only two more days to get this paper off, and I believe John is beginning to notice. I don’t like the look in his eyes.”

The wallpaper began depreciating, and so did the conquering influence that male hierarchy forced on women. He encaged his wife in a summer home, placing her in a room filled with barricades and many faults. As a human she is deprived of her rights and her ability to form house duties is taken away so she can rest as he calls it. Without a doubt, she fell into insanity because of the situation she was placed in. When she ripped the paper off the wall, it was a sign of freedom from her husband, and the bars that held her captive for weeks. The narrator goes crazy due partially to her prescribed role as a woman in 1892 being severely limited. One example is her being forbidden by her husband to “work” which includes working and writing. This restricts her from begin able to express how she truly feels. While she is forbidden to work her husband on the other hand is still able to do his job as a physician. This makes the narrator inferior to her husband and males in general. The narrator is unable to be who she wants, do what she wants, and say what she wants without her husband’s permission. This causes the narrator to feel trapped and have no way out, except through the yellow wallpaper in the bedroom.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses her short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” to express her opinions about feminism and originality. Gilman does so by taking the reader through the terrors of one woman's psychological disorder, her entire mental state characterized by her encounters with the wallpaper in her room. She incorporates imagery and symbolism to show how confined the narrator is because of her gender and mental illness.
While it may seem as though the speaker is becoming deranged, her bold action of tearing down the wallpaper is symbolic of her finally breaking free of the stereotypical roles of a woman.
