There are endless types of writing styles that people use. They use the one that they believe expresses their thoughts most clearly. I’m not sure if my writing style is part of those that are often used and to be honest, I do not know what type of style I use when I write. I think that the hardest part about writing is just getting started. That is why when I have a writing assignments I always start by using an I-chart. The I-chart is kind of shaped like an I, I learned how to make one when I was in elementary and it always has been useful for when I need to write. The I-chart consists of the top being the Intro, the middle having on the left three main topics and on the right there are examples for the main topics, and the bottom of the …show more content…
One of my goals that I want to achieve is be able to improve my wording and be able to get rid of sentences that I would not need without someone telling me to. When I read “how to write with style” and it stated “If a sentence, no matter how excellent does not illuminate your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out” (Kurt Vonnegut, page 2). It gave me the idea that I could improve my writing by getting rid of a sentence that does not belong. Before I read this advice, I didn’t think of trying to get rid of any of the sentences that were in my essays because they felt like they should be there. However, now I realize that there are always different ways to do things that will help me write better. When I write my essays and do the rough draft, I will try and get rid of sentences that don’t need to be there and put Kurt Vonnegut’s idea into practice. Another goal that I want to start working on would be to improve how I cite other people’s work into my writing. When I cite others work I’m not sure if I correctly put the quote in my writing the right way. The last goal that I have is that I want to be able to put my ideas into sentences and be able write what I want to say. When I read the article “simplicity” it said “Keep thinking and rewriting until you say what you want to say” (William Zinsser, page 3). When I read this it made me think that I would be able to put what I want to …show more content…
There are times when I have trouble writing and that is why I have goals to fix all the things that are bad about my writing. With the advice from the authors I will be able to achieve some of my goals by putting some of it to use in my writing by either getting rid of sentences I don’t need, writing something on a subject that I would be interested in, or lastly keep thinking and rewriting till I get it right. All of those will help make me better at writing because it would probably fix things that I need help on when I write. In the future I would probably need to to work on more things to improve but if I work hard on it I would probably be able to fix my mistakes as I continue
What is the definition of style? Is there an exact way of interpreting style individuals create in their writing? What is the importance and function of style in the writing process? Does style really matter? Before encountering books such as William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White’s “The Elements of Style” and Joesph M. Williams “Style Toward Clarity and Grace” I had not put much thought into these questions. My main focus was to get my writing assignments completed, turned in, and out of my mind. However, these two books create a whole new outlook on the world of writing for any individual who can open the cover and their mind.
While there are people who love to read and write, there are others that do not. When a student is required to read a book for a class and that student does not enjoy reading, there are very few things they would rather do less. And when that book’s topic is about learning how to write that is the worst of it. When I was assigned to read Writing with Style by John R. Trimble, my immediate thought was that this book and assignment was going to be a struggle to get through. To my pleasant surprise, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Writing with Style provides the reader with a wide range of writing tips while being written in a fun, conversational style. This book provides easy to find writing tools that can be understood by people of varying
According to the Webster’s New World Dictionary, the definition of style is “a characteristic manner of expression”(612). Usually words such as personal, individual, and unique also come to mind when we think of writing style. I have always associated writing style with belonging uniquely to one individual, meaning that everyone had his or her own style. After reading, “Style Toward Clarity and Grace” by Joseph Williams and “The Elements of Style” by William Strunk and E.B. White, I realized that style is not as unique as I thought. In fact, as I stated in my blog space, “writing has certain rules and elements that must be incorporated in to our writing in order to make our points clear to those we want to read it. Since these elements and rules are common to all writing, then style and good writing bring forth new meanings.”
From these books on style, I’ve learned that the content of the writing is not as important as the presentation of it. If a piece of writing is clear, concise, understandable, and formatted well, a reader will be affected by it. Of course the content is important as well, but the point is no reader will want to give a piece of writing the time of day unless they are attracted to it in the first place. If they are attracted, they will be affected. Style is personal and unique, but style can also follow guidelines which will in turn help a
While learning more about the five-paragraph essay and exploring my own personal writing style, I learned a great deal about my own thought process and how it ultimately transmits onto paper. I have discovered that having structure in the writing process ultimately leads to a more solid composition. This structure is not necessary to create ideas, but it certainly is accommodating in the actual writing processes. I have discovered that although I incorporate the components of the five-paragraph essay into my own writing formation, I do deviate from it ever so slightly. This deviation is the result of my inability to efficiently generate ideas (brainstorm) using common conventions. I do, however, plan on implementing a more structured approach in my writing style in the future and strongly believe it will help my writing become more concrete.
Many different styles of writing exist in the world. Because there are many different writers who write many different ways, and no specific "correct" style of writing, various people find themselves writing in a variety of ways. people write quickly, and others do not write as fast. Some people write en masse and others work one paragraph at a time. Personally, my writing style could best be compared to a wrecking ball. The two may seem immensely different, but – surprisingly – the two share many similarities and, after considering my past writing experiences and encounters, I find that no other image provides as appropriate a comparison to my writing as that of an old-fashioned, demolition wrecking ball.
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
One must remember that writing style is not something that just happens, but rather something that is developed. With the help of guides like Elements of Style, or books like Style Toward Clarity and Grace, one can begin to develop one.
The Pulitzer Prize winning writer N. Scott Momaday has become known as a very distinctive writer who depicts the stories of the Native American life in almost poetic ways. He does an excellent job of transporting the reader from the black and white pages of a book, to a world where every detail is pointed out and every emotion felt when reading one of Momaday’s books or other writings. This style of writing that Momaday uses is very evident in his work “The Way to Rainy Mountain,” and made even more apparent by reading a review of the book House Made of Dawn found on a web site run by HarperCollins Publishers.
I decided that the topic of my essay would be about the daily writing routine that my mother implemented and how it affected my view of writing. Since this assignment was a personal narrative, the logical organizational method would be chronological order. However, I soon realized that that method would be difficult to determine since my view of writing changed gradually over the course of a year instead of instantaneously. I created a vague outline where I described the first day that I received a journal and began the routine, within the first few paragraphs. Next, I placed the lessons that I learned, realizations, and what I enjoyed in the proceeding paragraphs.
I chose my project of writing a newspaper from Verona because I wanted to learn and improve on the type of writing style that is most commonly used in this type of informational writing. Due to the fact that my normal writing style is really different than the one that I chose to write in. I did that because I know that one of my weaknesses in writing is that I tend to be really bad when trying to mimic another writing style and I wish to improve on that, also that when I usually write I have a lot of unnecessary information and long winded sentences. Which I wanted to also try and improve on. Another reason why I chose this project is that I would like to have a career that involves writing and English in one aspect or another. Writing is also something that I like to do and a very important skill in my everyday life. Considering that I wanted to get as much experience in writing as I could and
A shriek pierces through the silence. I turn around and find a woman sitting on a black sofa with her head in her hands and a mess of coffee all over her laptop.
Having an adaptive writing style is an indispensible tool in every writer’s kit. No matter what the topic of discussion, a writer must possess the ability to convey a meaningful message to the audience they are addressing. The challenge lies in converting discussions from an academic journal or technical research document to a level understandable by that general audience to which you are addressing. In this paper, I will discuss how I approach choices of vocabulary, sentence length, and sentence structure when adapting a piece of technical or specialized writing.
According to Stephen North, writing is divided into five subcategories: cognitive, expressive, collaborative, epistemic, and political. I have never wanted to put my writing under an umbrella term such as these because my writing style tends to shift between different styles depending on what I write. For instance, when I was in high school, I wrote for the school newspaper for two years. Whenever I wrote articles, I would write objectively (unless if I was writing an editorial, in where I would write factually but with a clear sway that would support my argument) and precisely, using as few words as possible to make my points clearly and effectively. I had to also tie in current events to my articles, especially if I was writing for an important
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
