This semester has been my favorite semester that I have had so far. I have learned bounteous amounts of information in this class. Before this class, writing memos was completely foreign to me. At first, memos, quite frankly, befuddled me. I am not sure if it was the concept or the format that I found most confusing, but writing my first memo was one of the hardest things I did in this class. However, once I finally understood the concept, I loved them. In fact, I try to write memos for every chance that I get. The next thing I learned in this class is annotated bibliographies. Luckily, this assignment was a lot easier for me to understand. I did not realize how beneficial writing annotated bibliographies could be. When it came to evaluating …show more content…

So first, ethos has to do with establishing creditability; establishing creditability can be done my using reliable sources and properly giving credit to every person or source that one uses in a paper. Next, pathos has to do with emotions; this can basically make or break a paper. If there is too little emotion, a paper could be seen a weak and will not connect with the readers, but if there is an abuse of emotion, a paper could come off over dramatized or offensive to the readers. There is also logos, which is an appeal to logic; just like the other devices, if there is too much logic, a paper could be seen as boring and will not capture the attention of the readers, but if there is too little logic, the paper could be seen as illogical and not appeal to readers of higher intelligence. The ability to limit a search has been one of the most helpful parts when I am researching. The biggest indicators between scholarly and popular sources for me are the obvious signs that a writing has been peer reviewed or not and the credentials of the person who wrote the articles. The aspects of research that are easiest for me are being able to quickly shuffle through many different sources to find just what I need and knowing when a writer is an expert in their field. The most difficult aspect for me has been evaluating websites; I sometimes find it hard to determine when a website is a reliable source. Learning how to research has greatly improved my writing. Personal essays and short stories are simple types of writings that require little to no sources, but when it comes to research papers, it’s crucial to understand and know how to use sources. I have used the CNM databases for every other class that requires any form of writing or research.
