All my years I did not know there is a process for writing, but I did use some of the steps without knowing. The steps include preparing, reading, plan and organize, draft, review and revise. I always asked myself what is my purpose in writing an essay and what is the genre. There is way more than just that. The number one thing is making sure that the material being used is trustworthy. I have never used or heard of a database until college. It can be hard to use, but using keywords helps instead of typing a whole sentence. What I learned to do to see if I had enough information from that database was, to read paragraphs and then write what I retained after reading. It makes me think if the topic is the same as what I am trying to reach for on the essay. After I found enough information, I need a plan for writing. Planning will make the time more productive and lead to better results. I used a working outline to see how I will arrange the major sections and filled out the rest. ...ous. In high school I was not taught how to write an effective thesis, much less that there is a process to writing. I did know about conclusive sentences, but I learned how to go beyond just stating “and the next paragraph will be on”. Sometimes I would just ignore them. This class taught me that conclusive sentences are important because it allows the reader to see why the information should matter. Also, a thesis statement is more than just saying, “First I will talk about” and so on. No one goes to the book store and picks a random book up and walks to the counter and purchases it. They want to know what they will be diving into by getting a little taste of what the back of the book states. The same goes for a thesis statement. Writing is a complicated process, if done right, but I have learned how to do some of the things right thanks to English Composition One.
