Invention Project: The Airplane
Oliver and Wilbur Wright had invented the airplane in 1909. Their parents were Bishop Milton Wright and Susan Catherine. They had 3 other siblings. Their father worked as a minster in churches, causing them to move a lot. Also, their father pushed them to read extensively and deliberate issues. This encouraged the Wright Brothers to invoke in a wide variety of interests. When in France, their father bought them a small helicopter which helped spark a curiosity towards flight, and they soon began to build their own models.
At the turn of the century, the possibility of flight had begun to exceed the idea of gliders, but turn to the idea of a heavier than air aircraft. The Wright Brothers focused on a plan of an engine that was powerful yet light, and then worked on a design for controlling the plane once in the air. According to Tejvan Pettinger, on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brother began their first historic airplane, The Flyer. The first flight only lasted for 12 seconds and a distance of 120 feet at a rate of 6.8 miles per hour. Only five people had seen the first flight, which one was John Daniels who captures the first flight in a winning photograph. Over the next few years, they kept on redesigning and building their airplane. Soon after, they were becoming more unwilling to tell too much about their flights and asked reporters to stop taking pictures of their new plans. Though, Wilbur Wright began giving public demonstrations in France, around 1908. Wilbur had finally made an unrestricted flight by the Hudson River in New York, spinning around the Statue of Liberty, in 1909. It was a total of 33 minutes and observed by 1 million people in New York. The patent in 1903 was rejected. In result they hired an attorney, and received their first patent. Nonetheless, soon other pilots tried to avoid the Wright brothers’ patents, which caused them too many legal battles in the future.
At first, humans longed to soar like the birds in the sky, but materials were too heavy because of the density of the atmosphere. It prevented enough lift from the airplane to ever be developed. Gravity had won until the early 20th century. Oliver and Wilbur used a combustion engine according to Tom Crouch, a National Air and Space Museum keeper of early flight, and a propeller, which was only able to support height for a short flight of the Kitty Hawk, a flight test.
Lindbergh’s passion for mechanics didn’t come as a surprise to many. As a young boy, Charles seemed to be very interested in the family’s motorized vehicles, such as the Saxon Six automobile and Excelsior motorbike. But after starting college in the fall of 1920 as a mechanical engineer, his love for aviation started to bloom. Deciding that the field of aviation was more exciting, he dropped out within 2 years. He then decided to take lessons at the Nebraska Aircraft Corporation’s flying school and was up in the air for the first time on April 9, 1922 when he was in a two seat biplane as a passenger. But his solo flight would not be until May 1923 at the Souther Field in Americus, Georgia, an old flight training field where Lindbergh came to buy a World War I Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” biplane. It only took half an hour to practice with another pilot at the field to decide that Lindbergh was ready to fly the plane himself. After a week of practicing, Lindbergh took off on his biplane on his first solo cross country flight and few weeks after that, achieving his first nighttime flight near Arkansas, both marking huge milestones for the young pilot.

The Wright brothers made their first air worthy plane in 1903, since then, planes have come a long way. During the war, planes were used to drop bombs and cargo. The United States used a plane to drop atomic bombs. They were also used to spy on other countries before satellites were conventional. Planes were getting faster and more complicated. Now we have planes that can fly themselves and take photos. But until now no plane has been better than the SR-71, also known as the Black Bird.
Planes have developed immensely through the years. The Wright brothers developed the first plane in 1903.
The Wright Brothers were credited and praised by people for finishing the glider and flying it successfully. Crowds of people would watch the Wright Brothers and would celebrate with them. The greatest of their accomplishments being preparation. They had both practiced a lot in their spare time and aimed for good grades with percentages around 95%. But even though they had gotten those good grades they decided not to apply for a diploma.
The Wright brothers made the first motorized aircraft, that flew a distance of 852 feet in 59 seconds.To make this happen the Wright brothers had to put a lot of thought into it, some of the important details that were key to making the airplane fly where, the wings, propulsion system and engine.
The Wright brothers Orville and Wilbur are considered to be the fathers of modern flight. They were not the first to build and fly experimental aircraft, but they were the first who invented controls that made flight controllable. Before they revolutionized flight, many other methods had been attempted such as people jumping off buildings or other high locations with make shift wings attached to their arms, or machines that bounced up and down with something akin to an umbrella on top of them. None of these experiments were very successful though some did manage to glide very short distances.
While the brothers were discovering and how to make a plane glide and ultimately how to make it fly, they kept returning to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to test their ideas once the constructed them in the back of their bicycle shop. Over the course of four years the encountered “violent storms, accidents, disappointment, public indifference, and clouds of mosquitoes” and many other setbacks that would have shoken other inquiring pioneers (McCullough 106). Nevertheless, the challenges both nature and man-made never stood a chance to the Wright Brother’s endurant nature. Wilbur and Orville Wright were pioneers, skilled craftsman, and engineers not only in aviation but in many other trades as well. “They loved to tinker and experiment with mechanical things and it characterized the Wrights through out their lives. Each of the brothers had a deeply ingrained inquisitive streak that was nurtured in a home that was encouraged.” (Moolman, 1980, p. 107) They had a good family upbringing, but moved frequently. The Wright brothers paved the way for aviation to take off with their thoughts, ideas, and inventions.
Wilbur and Orville Wright spent their lives building and working with mechanical devices. They began with little toys as children and then grew up and began working with bicycles. These works lead them towards their work with airplanes. The Wright Brothers tried for many years to build a successful flying machine and succeeded. The Wright Brothers laid the foundation for aviation when they made history by being the first to create a successful flying machine.
The trials and tribulations of flight have had their ups and downs over the course of history. From the many who failed to the few that conquered; the thought of flight has always astonished us all. The Wright brothers were the first to sustain flight and therefore are credited with the invention of the airplane. John Allen who wrote Aerodynamics: The Science of Air in Motion says, “The Wright Brothers were the supreme example of their time of men gifted with practical skill, theoretical knowledge and insight” (6). As we all know, the airplane has had thousands of designs since then, but for the most part the physics of flight has remained the same. As you can see, the failures that occurred while trying to fly only prove that flight is truly remarkable.
The history of flying dates back as early as the fifteenth century. A Renaissance man named Leonardo da Vinci introduced a flying machine known as the ornithopter. Da Vinci proposed the idea of a machine that had bird like flying capabilities. Today no ornithopters exist due to the restrictions of humans, and that the ornithopters just aren’t practical. During the eighteenth century a philosopher named Sir George Cayley had practical ideas of modern aircraft. Cayley never really designed any workable aircraft, but had many incredible ideas such as lift, thrust, and rigid wings to provide for lift. In the late nineteenth century the progress of aircraft picks up. Several designers such as Henson and Langley, both paved the way for the early 1900’s aircraft design. Two of the most important people in history of flight were the Wright Brothers. The Wright brothers grew up in West Dayton, Ohio, and ever since they were children they were destined for greatness. Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, in Millville, Indiana, and Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio, on August 19 (Kelly 5). The brothers’ parents were Milton and Susan Wright, and their siblings consisted of two older brothers and one younger sister (Weir 5). Almost as instantly as they were conscious of having their own interests, Wilbur and Orville were extremely intrigued in mechanics (Kelly 5). In fact, one of Orville’s most clear memories from his childhood was his fifth birthday where he received a gyroscopic top that could maintain its balance while at the same time spinning on the edge of a knife blade (Kelly 5). On top of this, one day when Mr. Wright returned home from a short church business trip (Mr. Wright was a Bishop), he had brought back toy helicopters, made from a Frenchman named Alphonse Pénaud, that were constructed from cork, bamboo, thin paper, and twisted rubber bands, of which the boys wildly admired (Kelly 8). The creation of the airplane dates back to December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk North Carolina(inventors.about), which was created by Orville and Wilbur Wright. The experiment for the first plane consisted of taking a man and placing him in the plane and then having the plane raise by its own power, in result this would cause it to fly in a natural manner at even speeds and then defending without any damage (Bellis). The craft they created was called a biplane. A biplane, an aircraft of early design, consists of two sets of wings placed at different levels in a vertical stack with the fuselage(the body of an airplane, containing the cockpit, passenger seating, and cargo) between them. Also the first airplane soared at a height of ten feet and went one hundred twenty feet and touched back down after fifty nine seconds in the air (Bellis). Today theres 1,568 commercial airlines and 23,844 aircrafts in commercial service (Fact Sheet:
