After reading over the book entitled, “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle—How to Become a Servant Leader”, by James C. Hunter, I have learned that in order to lead one must serve. This book has provided me with the necessary principles needed to assist me as a Senior Executive Director at the UCF Community Care Center (UCCC). I like how the author specifically states that his book is not a way to teach one how to lead, rather it provides one with the path to take to be an effective leader. The book has assisted me the last few months in making a positive difference in the organization, especially being newly employed here at UCCC. My new employment here at UCCC has allowed me to have the character that one can know to respect, and has allowed me to slowly build authority, not through only …show more content…
There are so many businesses that have such high turnaround due to unhappy employees. Unhappy employees will eventually affect business profitability in the long term. Leaders must be equipped to connect with their employees. There are so many resources available to assist in meeting those tough challenges as a leader, such as a wide range of personalities and multiple departments. I have learned that along with leadership there needs to be rules and regulations in place, because without an organized company employees will not feel secure in their work environment. When I started at UCCC I quickly noticed that many things were out of place, the front office was a mess, many of the employees had not had their evaluations completed, and in addition, the office staff had conflict between the front office and the back office. I immediately set out to make sure the front office was cleaned up. My first priority is to ensure that confidential papers were off the floor and filed away. I then set out to ensure that employee evaluations were completed. I contracted the financials to an outside company, as the prior
The real person who has made an impact on not only myself, but a great deal of people in the community over quite a few years is Ms. Barbara Neiman of Brockton Avenue Elementary School. Working in different fields over the course of her life, Ms. Neiman has had to convert to various styles of leadership. Since she has had to alter the ways in which she leads, I selected pieces from three different practices that I believe best fit her: The Path-Goal Theory, Servant Leadership, and a little bit from the Behavioral Approach.
Finding Your Voice: Learning to Lead…Anywhere You Want to Make a Difference, by Larraine R. Matusak is a book, which explains the proper way to incorporate leadership into one’s life. The author approaches the topic of Leadership with a quite passionate point of view. Matusak observes leadership through a very wide lens. In other words, she is a firm believer that there is more than one way to effectively carry out the act of leadership. The author is on a mission to bring out the natural leadership skillset in all people, and too encourage anyone and everyone to find a way to lead in life. The main focus of the book is the fact that one does not require any sort of title or major position of power to live out their passion and to customize leadership opportunities for their individual talents. This very concept was stressed constantly throughout this book, along with the idea of weaving a shared vision. Weaving a shared vision is a very important aspect of leadership because it involves shaping all minds involved in an organization to point them towards a common goal. Let’s take a look at some of the main points that Matusak states in her book.
Servant leadership is a designation coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970 in an essay entitled The Servant as Leader. In this essay, he describes the servant leader and a servant first contrary to one who is a leader first. The difference is the servant chooses to put others needs before his own while the leader first may later become a servant from the promptings of a sense of right and wrong or simply because they are coerced in that direction (Greenleaf, 1991).
A leader is made up of many qualities. Max Depree is the author of Leadership Jazz. In this novel Depree talks about leadership and how it is an art. Depree really goes in depth about leadership and gives many relevant examples. It showed me that there is a lot more to leadership then I originally thought. One of the main characteristics of a leader is integrity.

The basic philosophy of servant leadership can be traced back through centuries. From Greek philosophers like Plato, to religious figures such as Jesus, all have been credited as sources that servant leadership has drawn from. Even Sir Francis Bacon was quoted “Men in great place are thrice servants, servants of the sovereign or state, servants of fame and servants of business.” (valeri) While there are traces of servant leadership all over ancient coulters, Robert K Greenleaf is credited as the first modern philosopher introducing the topic we identify as servant leadership. (valeri) Through Greenleaf’s writings, we now have a clear text that lays the groundwork allowing us to understand what a servant leader is.
Through everything I describe above, and through research for this paper, I now know I have an servant leadership style. Servant leadership is a contemporary leadership style and is described well by Davies (2017) when she states “Servant leadership is based upon a natural feeling of wanting to serve. It is a philosophy with a set of practices that enriches the lives of others, ultimately creating a more caring environment, both in the workplace and in the wider world”.
M.D. Arnold once said, “A good leader leads the people from above them. A great leader leads the people from within them.” Reading this quote always reminds me of my decision to go into the Human Resource Management and Development field. It reminds me of what being in a leadership role is all about and how the wrong kind of leadership influence can potentially break or corrupt an organization. Ever since I can remember, I have always been the friend who others felt comfortable enough to speak to about their issues. I have always been the student who tries to find different methods to learn. I have always been the employee who makes sure my peers feel comfortable with the work given to them. I have always been a leader.
When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
In your discussion board topic you convey how important it is for each servant leadership to keep communications open with their employees; by doing this they created trust among their people. Servant leadership is not self-serving, their goal is to motivate and mobilized others to achieve a task to think with creativity, integrity, vision and skills for the benefit of all who are involved. As a servant leadership they do not negate on accountability or responsibility; for them it is a way of life and is part of a team working together for the same goal. Sometimes their roles require for them to recommend correction or a suitable discipline, but always taking into consideration the interest and emotions of the criminals and others for the
The book called Spiritual Leadership, by Henry and Richard Blackaby is about the being a leader. That the leader has a challenges that we have to face every day. It is also about being learn how to help other and lead them to the Lord.
The idea of leadership, and particularly the idea of servant leadership is one that I’ve had vested interest in. Servant leadership is discussed frequently in Christian theology, being held in high regard. It often described in the form of certain morals while in a leadership position. A good definition could be: to take on a servant mindset while a leader. However, my main experience with leadership, and thus this idea, is not with the church but with the boy scouts.
In the article by Udani and Lorenzo-Molo, the need for servant leadership was viewed as the nation being a downward state and in the throes of transitioning from a dictator into an unknown future. Although viewed in retrospect, a valid case is made that a servant leader can be quite effective when leading a bounce back. The traits of Corazon were just the medicine needed to not only heal the Philippines but lead them into their path to democracy. In a general sense the need for servant leadership can come in other forms. In the article “Promoting leadership effectiveness in organizations” by Shekari and Nikooparvar two areas of the need for servant leadership is touched upon. They look at challenges
Relocation of a business that has been around for 75 years is very detrimental. It not only effects those that are close to retirement, but those that are proficient at their job duties. The relationships you have built over the years will become strained and fall outs will begin within the company. As a human resource director, there should be methods in place to motivate, encourage, and keep employees from leaving the company. In addition, there must be a communication strategy, question and answers prepared; as well as keep employees focused on their current task before the relocation begins. In this case study, there will be a thorough discussion about leadership theories, importance of positive reinforcement, and leadership styles.
"A leader is an individual (or, rarely, a set of individuals) who significantly affects the thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors of a significant number of individuals” (Gardner, Howard 2012). An essential part of a leader lies in their ability to motivate and influence people to follow their lead. Leaders are both men and women who have the ability to influence others in a community, control situations, connect with others and persuade others to follow them or the goals they define. To be a good leader one must set a good example and make correct decisions for difficult choices. I myself am implementing leadership skills into my every day life. Leadership skills are all around us. They can be applied to any situation where one may be required to take the lead. This can be
