When I was in middle school my parents allowed me to have a computer and it was kept upstairs in my bedroom. For a brief period of time I discovered the world of online fashion and beauty forums. I was only 13 at the time but many of the women posting on the forum were adults, and I was very naive about posting personal information. Luckily, nothing bad ever happened and after a few months I no longer visited the online forums. As I look back at this time in my life I realize that things could have gone downhill quickly and I don’t want other young children to fall into the same situation that I did. This is why I believe that social networking websites should actively restrict the posting of personal information by users of a certain age to protect them from victimization.
During the early stages of Internet growth and development there was little opportunity for young adolescents to disclose personal information on social networking sites. An eMarketers report from 2006 estimated that 85% of children ages 12-14 in the United States would be online by 2010, compared with 74% in 2006 (YOUN, 2009). In today’s technological age it would be surprising to find a child age 12-14 who doesn’t have some form of internet access. With this being said, it is important that children are aware that posting personal information can get them into trouble and we should promote steps for safe social networking use. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) requires that websites targeting children must obtain verifiable parental consent for information collected from children under age 13 (Turow, 2001). I believe that social networking sites, although they don’t target children, should make children 14 and under obtain verifiab...

... with their children in hopes to teach them about Internet safety and what is okay to post and what information should be kept private.
Overall, I believe that social networking websites should actively restrict the posting of personal information by users of a certain age to protect them from victimization. It is important that parents talk to their children about what is okay to post online and what types of information are best kept private. As the prevalence of social networking increases I would like to see more security measures for children appear. Working with websites to restrict the posting of personal information would benefit both children and parents. By restricting the posting of personal information through increased security measures already set up on social networking websites children will be able to have a more safe and pleasant experience online.
