During this quarter we have covered various themes throughout all the reading we were assigned. The last novel we had to read was The World in Half by Cristina Henríquez and what made this book so different and unique from the others was it’s location, Panama. The others novels and stories we read were about immigrants from Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, which are the most popular Latino community. Other Spanish speaking countries don 't get much recognition in the United States, especially Central America. Most Americans can’t distinguish all of the Spanish-speaking countries, so they put all of us in the same box.
Novels similar to The World in Half contribute to a more diverse representation of U. S. Latinos since, Americans know very little of Central America countries and the majority think that we are all Mexicans. The purpose of the author in creating a character with an origin in Panama, is to let the reader know about more Spanish-speaking countries that are not Mexico, Puerto Rico or Cuba. Central American history is not discussed with much detail and this doesn 't only happen in the United States; during my education in Puerto Rico I only got to learn about the Panama Canal in my U.S history class and it was because I had to do a presentation. We did learn about South American experiences and history, but Central America was something we didn 't discuss. Now that I think that I notice how strange it is to be so close to Central America and have so many similarities and not know basically anything about them. During my research of my U.S History class about Panama I learn that many Central American experiences are overshadowed in U.S Latina/o Studies. Something I notice is that many people don 't know how Panama came to...

...tice. In the novel, we see Miraflores determine to get involved in her family past to find the truth and at the same time discovering herself and Panama. We also, saw how social justice works in Panama, Panamanians go to the streets and protest not caring how dangerous it can be. The novel discusses Education and Career Planing, which the majority of my classmates can relate to. In the novel Miraflores talked to the Dean to discuss scholarships and financial aid, which is a common topic for every college student.
The World in Half is a splendid novel that covers various topics in a clear and effective way for the reader to comprehend. This book talks about discovering yourself and your past and during this quarter we had the opportunity to discover of ourselves, our cultures and our identity in Chicago just as the characters of the novels we read about in our class.
