It informs that Portland citizens have collaborated with the Portland Development Commission to observe 35 blocks that they expect those city blocks to become a model of urban sustainability. To establish energy goals, city planners calculate how much oxygen would be released and carbon dioxide used in a forest area in the size of 35 city blocks. I like how it demonstrate the plan they are using and how it gets the citizens and government to work together. Although, this source is outdated but I would like to use it in my essay since it states that the neighborhood would cut down its net energy and water, while maintaining its connection to the city's sewage system and power network because I would like to know the outcome of the plan; whether they accomplish their goal as reducing of energy and water or not. I would like to use this information to illustrate how Portland become green, as it shows the audience that the city starts to concern about sustainability long time ago, and still develops its city to become better.
The article covers the introduction to ‘We Build Green Cities’ that start by the city of Portland, Oregon to increase trades and regional economy. I would probably use some ideas from this source to write about how the business owners and economic are growing together, as well as green development practices that have turn into a part of the city's uniqueness. I found this found this article on Academic Search Premier. It focuses on the plan of Portland to improve its Green Building Program through the development of High Performance Green Building Policy. It shows that building codes has major role in the establishment of environmentally friendly houses, which need citizens to utilize green resources and lower energy and water use. Additionally, the green policy encourages people to install the eco roofs and observe storm water managing practices that will support homeowners to save water and protect the environment. I would definitely use this source on my paper because it is very useful example that shows as one of the projects that Portland is working on and perhaps other urban cities can also use this project to become more sustainable.
LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a certification program for green buildings with stringent requirements for building energy efficient and environmentally responsible structures. Even building and homes use half of the non-recyclable resource. Sustainability architecture is not the newest concept. The sustainable architecture is rarely ever used, reason behind is the both the architect and the client. It’s the job of architect to involve the client in the idea of the sustainable architecture. Due to the lack of solid resources most architects are unable to create or design a new sustainable architecture for a client. Even though options are given to the client about the sustainable architecture, however the client turns down the offer because they may not want to the pay the additional costs to construct. At some point the client has to be educated about design issues “sleek doesn’t mean better” and “a glass wall is not better than a concrete wall”. Time will come when people will have to be concerned about the internal architecture than the exterior architecture. Architects must stop withdrawing information from the catalogue and use their own design ability to reshape the way architecture runs. Sustainability architecture not only is preferable for the environment but it also gives the opportunity for the architect to really push the design beyond its limit. Green building advancement dates back to the late nineteenth century when it started with the concepts of environmental conservation and preservation, and public health protection. The idea at that time was opposed because the public felt that it contradicted social norms that defined how a private home should be constructed for the good of the public. It was later accepted as a measure of environmental conservation and at the present, green building programmes are fully established departments in various counties in the United States. Home builder associations and non-governmental bodies have taken the collective responsibility in advocating for green building. Many people now believe that these programmes reflect a paradigm shift in the cultural perspective, in view of public health and environmental conservation (Moore, and Nathan 51).
The perfect green building would protect the environment which surround the project site, and could be used as a building that is going to achieve a purpose. The construction and operation levels of the green building will help to have a healthy environment without disrupting the land, water, energy and resources used inside the building and around the building in the project site; this is the actual definition of the green building.

In a world where over half of the human population calls a city their home, the need to restructure and revolutionize the way we design our urban environments has never been greater. So as you can see, the savings and redistribution of wealth provided by sustainable measures has profound impact on all parties involved. Though it matters which option a given community chooses to use, it doesn’t matter why. The only good choice is to take action and move to a greener world. If Iowa can do it, why can’t everyone?
