Clifford Geertz, the most emblematic figure of interpretive anthropology, has a great impact on social and cultural theory. His analysis and interpretation of Balinese Cockfight and their relevance in social science is going to be discussed in this paper. After that, the event of Balinese Cockfight be again analyzed in respect of Levi-Strauss’s Structuralism and Victor Turner’s symbolic analysis. A range of disciplines from anthropology to sociology to cultural studies and history are theoretically and methodically influenced by his very own “cultural system”. The works of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Max Weber influenced the thoughts and ideas of Geertz. He used “Weberian Framework” in both Agricultural Involution (1963a) and Peddlers and Princes (1963b). Geertz rationalized the modernization in Indonesia by following the Weber’s outlook, towards using the concept of religion, culture, and ideals (Geertz, 1972).
He always tried to present public meaning in intellectual life by using automatic and paradigmatic references, like “cockfight”, “thick description”, parables, oft-repeated quotes, and others. Clifford Geertz is one of the exceptional and enduring personality in social theory who turned back the dark forces of entropy and neglect as well as walked out of the desert just like biblical code. His ascent movement started in the 1960s with the adoption of more hermeneutically sensitive alternative approach in against of systems theory. However, following the publication of “The Interpretation of Cultures” he remained as a footnote in anthropology due to his subtle and elusive approach along with the humanist search for meaning.

The outlook of Geertz towards culture is as an “organized collection of symbolic systems” whereas Turner with his British structural-functionalist style accentuated on the operation of symbols in the maintenance of society. So, the focus of Geertz is on how “symbols operate as vehicles of culture” rather than showing interest in how symbols perform cultural functions (Ortner 1984, pp 129).
In conclusion, it can be said that Geertz deciphers the various symbolic meanings of this event and how these various levels of meaning influence the lives of Balinese people participating in the sport. So, Geertz till today has significant impact on the social sciences and Yale Conference in Oct, 2007 critically analyzed him from the aspect of social sciences (Symbolic anthropology, n.d.).
