An Act of Workplace Violence Leadership carries with itself many benefits. Conversely, leadership also possesses many demands and challenges. According to Clark (1997), ”leadership’s main function is to produce movement and constructive or adaptive change through processes, such as establishing direction through visioning, aligning people, motivating, and inspiring” (p. 1). Unquestionably, this is a monumental task by any standard. Moreover, many expect leaders to perform these functions perfectly. Leaders like all of us, however, make errors. Later that day, Johana’s supervisor, Romea was in the office. I spoke to Romea who was unaware of the event and said it would be discussed at the next staff meeting. I waited one month but it was never discussed at the staff meetings nor did Romea or Johana ever speak with me about this incident.

Disruptive behaviors such as bullying, incivility, and horizontal/lateral violence are prevalent issues in the health care field. These behaviors not only create hostility among colleagues, but they also decrease safety and can increase cost of patient care. The affect disruptive behavior has on patient care and team morale are reasons for action against this issue. Disrespectful behavior violates the code of ethics for nurses, which are ethical standards set by the American Nurses Association (ANA) (Lachman, 2014). While disruptive behavior is a violation of ethical standards, it goes unnoticed in many health care settings.
I didn't pay much attention to the employee who looked down the aisle as I decided on a small silver headset. But in the midst of grabbing my chosen prize, I noticed the same employee look down the aisle again. I froze, and thought, No way, you're overreacting. It can't be. So, headset in hand, I walked to the end of the aisle and looked over. The employee was nowhere to be seen. I shrugged and looked back down my aisle only to see her at the other end, looking at me! I was startled and quite upset, so I gave her an odd look and started walking to the other side of the section. I wanted to see what would happen, and hoped I was imagining things. There I pretended to browse, then turned around. The employee was right there! She turned quickly to fix something that wasn't out of place. I was infuriated and humiliated at how I was being treated. Not once was I asked if I needed help, but the whole time, I was spied on.

Therefore, this position statement is relevant because these abuses can be seen in day-to-day healthcare environment. The effects of violence in nursing can be harmful to the proper function within a workplace. It can be damaging to the nursing profession and patient care. According to (Johnston et al., 2010, p.36), workplace violence is “spreading like a ‘superbug.’” Studies have shown, that lateral violence, nurse-on-nurse, has been one of the highest incidence of violence within the workplace. Also, statistics have shown that lateral violence has one of the most emotional impacts on an individual. This will be further discussed below. For these reasons, it is important for healthcare workers to validate the detrimental effects violence can have in the workplace, and be prepared to combat and prevent workplace violence.

Leadership is trait that is extremely important in any society. Leadership is known as the way people attempting to make a difference in a situation. However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.

The US Department of Labor defines workplace violence as “An action (verbal, written, or physical aggression) which is intended to control or cause, or is capable of causing, death or serious bodily injury to oneself or others, or damage to property. Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266).
