Productivity in the Workplace
Current Workplace Environment
Although production needs are being met, improvements in productivity are always at the forefront of management’s thoughts. Doing more with less is a constant effort for middle management and hourly laborers. Over all the environment is comfortable, management and hourly employees interact well. There is a sense of “us versus them” mentality from the union to management but this is lower then has been observed at other manufacturing sights with in the company.
Issues Detrimental to Productivity
Management does not consistently include hourly employees in on decision making that directly affects them. This lowers productivity by not giving the employee a feeling of ownership/investment in the process. According to the Hawthorne Studies employees “enjoyed being the center of attention” meaning they improved performance (reacted positively) because they believed management cared about them. This has been termed as the “Hawthorne Effect”. (DuBrin, 2004, p.14).
The training program for both hourly and management has a vague over all structure but no substantive continuing contribution. Many different learning materials are available but are in disarray and are not standardized into closely related activates. This redund...

The absence of appropriate motivation, fairness, and communication are recognized as the root causes of the issues at the Engstrom Auto Mirror Plant. These are the real issues that added to the decrease in efficiency and product quality. Workers who are affected in an organization might be a result of de-motivation, poor communication, and personal conflict. The presence of these components is the thing that could result in a decline of workers’ productivity, since workers feel they have no control over their work and what they produce. “The success of any Analysis Organization depends on the ability of managers to provide a motivating environment for its employees” (Osabiya, p. 63).
Organizations face massive challenges in attracting and retaining a high-quality and productive workforce. Companies are continually looking for new ways to keep their employees satisfied at all levels in order to harness greater productivity and ideas from people while keeping them motivated and happy. One real challenge examined earlier is the need to transform General Motors to be a much more productive and fully utilized organization by examining the hourly workforce. This is a great change from the traditional "us versus them" mentality of the past between management and the union.
The author Tracy Mullen states exactly what all ownerships, supervisors and managers spend time thinking about when it comes to their employee’s, how do we increase morale and productivity? Owning, running and even managing a productive organization is not an easy task to say the least. However to have a productive organization you must have productive employee’s and management staff. Organizational success it is required to implement managerial functions appropriately. How a company is structured can lead to overly productive employees or it can lead to employees whom are ineffective and not trust worthy of your organization. Companies are spending millions of dollars on researching how to hire, train and maintain great employee’s, the flip
The culture of appreciating employees for their hard work and achievements by incentives shows how the organization values their employees. Lincoln believed “Status is of great importance in all human relationships. The greatest incentive that money has, usually, is that is it a symbol of success... The resulting status is the real incentive... Money alone can be an incentive to the miser only. There must be complete honesty and understanding between the hourly worker and management if high efficiency is to be obtained”. This shows how harmoniously the labor and management have to work together to produce
This management structure where “everyone does everything”, obviously create an ideal learning environment, “one in which people have an engaging experience on a daily basis”. While it permits speed in decision making since approvals are not required from the top management, they can also prove to be inefficient and costly at times. Not only does the employe...
As owners we are in charge of the management responsibilities, we think that it’s important to acknowledge the concerns of the employees and look at the situation from their point of view. We have noticed that thei...
When approaching any type of research, there is a final goal that the researcher(s) wants to achieve, whether there is a hypothesis to test or exploratory data to gather and analyze. With my research, I wanted to relate to my current position at work and future promotion opportunities. In my current position as a Project Engineer, I have responsibilities of managing a project from start to finish while working with a cross functional team. Many times while working on a project, there are items that need to be assigned and/or completed and I can have a difficult time doing this because I do not have any direct reports. Through creating and maintaining good relationships, I am able to have some employees do things I ask them to, but there are always a few that will wait till there supervisor assigns them the task. As defined by Dr. Paul Mullen, motivation is the inner drive that causes one to act (Mullen, 1993). With this history, I wanted to focus on how I can motivate employees to do their best work_ what drives employees to yield a high work performance.
The relationship between job satisfaction, motivation, and efficiency or productivity is very important in the business industry as well as in personal life. Long term research has found that the single greatest predictor of longevity is work satisfaction. Work is one third to one half of a persons' lifetime, and if frustrated the mental and physical effects are very costly. Job characteristics including skill variety, task identity, and task significance lead to psychological conditions in which in turn leads to increased motivation, performance and job satisfaction. It is important to investigate this area in order to determine how much of an effect does overall job satisfaction, motivation and productivity have on each other. It is also important to research the relationship between job satisfaction because it can assist businesses in designing and manufacturing an environment to maximize productivity and efficiency while keeping their employees satisfied. Finally, it is significant to study because it can help people better understand what job will best suit them to be motivated and satisfied while making a difference in the productivity level.
The last bolt is screwed on as a relieved automotive worker marvels at his wondrous creation: a car. With the roar of an engine, the car slowly disappears into the distance. The worker gradually turns around, picks up his tools, and continues to work on a new car. As a consumer, we rarely wonder how things are made; we simply take everything we own for granted. For once, have you wondered how many hours of hard labor many automotive workers must go through? The automotive industry has been around for many years, but it has not always been as efficient as it currently is. As the industry continues to evolve, many new innovative ideas are still being developed. In the past, automotive workers have had to work in harsh conditions without much security or job benefits. Nevertheless, through the continuous development of organized collective bargaining, workers are being treated as they should be. Being the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, General Motors Corporation has been greatly affected by the needs of their workers. Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors, is currently in charge of “running the show” at GM. Being the most successful automotive company since 1931, it is obvious that he not only has to satisfy customers, but also the workers within the company. From the smallest things such as a work raise to bigger things such as the working condition, the management of General Motors has been pressured to make both positive and negative changes to the way the company is run as a whole in order to satisfy the workers who are part of the UAW Union. Therefore, the formation and development of unions encompasses both pros and cons.
The book I chose to read is Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen. David Allen is considered by Forbes Magazine to be in the top five executive coaches in the United States. He has over thirty years of experience in coaching some of the highest ranking executives in some of the biggest businesses in the United States. Time Magazine called this book, “the defining self-help business book of it’s time."
As many of organizations go to globalization, the rapid changes in technology, and increasing market, organizations have to be competitive. In order to be a successful organization, it depends highly on human resources like workers’ skills, experiences and on productivity. Therefore, trade unions need to play a role of proactive and supportive in helping management so that work force will become productivity (Boon, 1999).
But recently there has been a murmur between the employees about the added working hours due to the international market. This added hour has exhausted their enthusiasm unlike the time when it was opened. Most workers don't complain to the added hour but rather for their salary that hasn't increased even after the late working hours. Hoping that in the near future things will change, workers spent almost a year without their salaries increasing by a dime. Finally, the workers hoping to resolve this conundrum decided to send 7 representatives to discuss the issue at hand.
The objective of this research is to study factors which affect the employees’ performance. Each
The term 'Industrial Relations' denotes relationships between Management and workers in the industry. It has roots in the economic and social changes have occurred from time to time. Therefore, the term should not be restricted to mean merely the relations between the union and the management, but a vast complex of relationship between the union and themanagement, management and employers, union and employees and between employees themselves. However, the major parties to Industrial
Life is more about mental and spiritual satisfaction than having money. After a certain period, the happiness of the inner soul is more important than having a bank balance. Career is something with whom one can live his or her whole life without having a break or getting bored that one can have only by having a joy in his or her work. There is a saying “The only way to do the great work is to love what you do. If you haven 't found it yet, keep looking. Don 't settle.” – by Steve jobs. It means that people should do what they love and if they are happy with what they are doing they should settle with it and if not, then just go look for the happiness, there are many opportunities waiting. There are three major aspects of explaining
