Work experience & Educational Background Currently I am the sore owner of Edwards’ HRM Consultant Services, and has been owner operator since September 15, 2012. From 2001-2008, I worked for Dan & Stone Landscaping Services, where I did monthly billing, customers and employees scheduling. From 1977-1996, I was employed by General Motors Corporation in Pontiac, Michigan, where I worked as an assembly worker, but from time to time was asked to do clerical work, then quality control, and later became a United Way Representative for General Motors Corporation employees, both hourly and salary. From 1971-1975, I worked for Bloomfield Hills Nursing Home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan as a Nurse-aide, and later as a union representative for employees on the second shift from 3pm to 11pm. As a union representative I had the opportunity to work with head AFL-CIO union officials and the company owners in negotiating a labor contract for employees throughout the nursing home. I attended Eenon Bible college from 1992-1993, where I studied biblical studies. I was a full time student, and received a certificate in Biblical studies. Next, I am currently attending Baker College, and have been a part-time student since 2007-present. I have recently completed all required courses with the exception of WRK 218 Work Experience Project toward an associate degree in Human Resources Management with a minor in Marketing. I am also currently working toward a bachelor degree in Human Resource Management with a minor in Psychology. I have acquired an additional thirty-two credit hours toward my bachelor degree at Baker College, which I am currently enrolled in. I chose Baker College at this time in my life, because I felt Baker College offered the courses ... ... middle of paper ... ...tive style, tenure, organizational function, education, background and more. Diversity not only involves how people perceive themselves, but how they perceive others. These perceptions affect their interactions” (Greenberg, 2005, paragraph, 3). Along with my past work experiences, and educational background in Human Resources at Baker College, I feel I am well qualified to meet any oppositions, as well as face any competition from others in my business as an HR consultant. Because of such high demands in the marketplace for HRM professionals, small businesses as well as large organizations will need consultation, or coaching from HR consultants such as mines to stay effective and competitive in the marketplace. Overall I have enjoyed my studies in HRM at Baker College. My course studies has also trained me to be an effective professional in work world of HRM.
Gender, racial, and ethnic diversity means different things to different people. Some believe that diversity is about quotas, and affirmative action. Others believe that diversity is something that will happen on its own with out intervention. Some experts who study diversity, however, believe that diversity is not something that should be left up to chance. It is important, therefore, for organizations to take action to encourage and foster diversity in the workplace (Clarke, 1995, p. 13).
Within an organization, diversity is considered a having a population of people that are of different races or cultures working collectively. From this collection of people, a variance of perspective is formed and talent is fostered in order to maximize performance. These great minds work
Diversity is a highly important issue in today’s business, especially in a globalized company. Workplace diversity helps to get better solutions to business problems (Schawbel, 2012). When you have a group of individ...
Whether an organization consists of five or 25,000 employees, human resources management is vital to the success of the organization. HR is important to all managers because it provides managers with the resources – the employees – necessary to produce the work for the managers and the organization. Beyond this role, HR is capable of becoming a strong strategic partner when it comes to “establishing the overall direction and objectives of key areas of human resource management in order to ensure that they not only are consistent with but also support the achievement of business goals.” (Massey, 1994, p. 27)
Mental/Physical Abilities Family Status Race, Income, Religion Ethnic Heritage First Language, Education. Sexual Orientation Organizational Role & Level. Communication & Work Styles Harvey, C. The components of a diversity mixture can be people, concepts, concrete items, or abstractions.
To succeed in this highly competitive environment, managers must find ways to get the highest level of contribution from their workers. And they will not be able to do that unless they are aware of the many ways that their understanding of diversity related to how well, or how poorly, people contribute (Johnston & Packer, 1987).

It seems that HRM is so crucial to the organization, for what it does has nearly covered all aspects of the business – from strategic planning to the training and development, but unfortunately, its importance has not been accepted by everyone. As proposed by Morton, C, Newall, A. & Sparkes, J. (2001) there are three different views of HR function within the...
Diversity in the work place and the ideas from all its unique employees is crucial to enhancing the work environment and to boosting the company’s growth. Having a male dominated work place gives little room for outside ideas. In the article, Diversity - The Gift That Keeps Giving states that “According to Professor Roy Y.J. Chua, “The more your network includes individuals from different cultural backgrounds, the more you will be creatively stimulated by different ideas and perspectives...Importantly, these ideas do not necessarily come from the network members who are culturally different from you.” Having different perspectives give a company the upper hand when compared to other companies that only have similar minded employees working together.
The third stage in HRM development which began in the late 1970?s and early 1980?s was the realisation that effective HRM could give an organisation competitive advantage. Within this stage HRM is viewed as important for both strategy formulation and implementation. For example 3M?s noted scientists enable the company to pursue a differentiation strategy based on innovative products. At the competitive stage, then, human resources are considered explicitly in conjunction with
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (n.d.) defines diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; especially, the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization”. In general, diversity is often only related with differences in race and gender. In actuality, numerous elements can determine diversification in the workplace. Elements such as skills, abilities, experience, values, age, and education could be part of a diverse footprint in an organization. Other important attributes related to diversity include disabilities, religion, sexual orientation, and marital status (Guillame et al., 2013). The adoption of diversity in the workplace has the potential to increase organizational effectiveness in many ways. Organizations that practice diversity tend to increase their capacity to innovate and make better decisions.
Diversity issues will gain importance because of the effective interactions and communications between the people. Diversity is the reality of the business world. It can have negative and positive impact on the employee’s behaviour towards work and work results. This also depends on how the employees have understood it and grasps it.
Companies need to focus on diversity and look for ways to become totally inclusive organizations because diversity has the potential of harvesting greater productivity and competitive advantages. Managing and valuing diversity is a key component of effective human resource management, which can improve workplace productivity.
Along with my change of interest and working for a company that helps pay for my school I was looking for a better college to attend and that had a program that would fit my needs. I soon became aware of Maryville University and the weekend and evening college program that they offered.
