Providing Security. The lack of discrimination protection for LGBTQ individuals can make it extremely hard for these individuals to provide for their family. “Studies show that anywhere from 15 percent to 43 percent of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people have experienced some form of discrimination and harassment in the workplace” (GAY & Major, 2015). Imagine having to fear for your job every day, add to that the possibility of harassment and or abuse and you have the perfect storm for failure. “Employers should be focused on skill and talent, not on the race, religion, sex, national origin or sexual orientation of an employee” (GAY & Major, 2015). The Equality act would ensure that sexual orientation would have its own title under the non-discrimination laws. This would leave no room for excuses or misunderstandings as to whether it was legal or not, and thus provide the LGBTQ community with protection and security within the workforce.
Provide legal guidelines as consequences for discrimination. Because there are no dedicated laws for the discrimination of sexual orientation and or gender identity there is no consequences for employers who are guilty of discrimination. “Private sector employers who openly discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation are not currently subject to liability under federal law” (GAY & Major, 2015). This means that they can terminate an employee solely on the basis of their sexual orientation and or gender identity with no consequences and or repercussions. It is likely that this battle will never cease to exist as long as there are groups of people who are being denied basic rights and protections. However, one policy at a time we are ensuring that equality is brought to all and that our society continues to grow and improve. By ensuring that LGBTQ individuals are able to adopt under the same standards, and providing them with discrimination protection within the workforce we are bringing our nation one step closer to greatness and ensuring that the words in the Declaration of Independence stands true. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” (U.S. Declaration of Independence, Paragraph 4 (1776).
