Recommended: role of women in changes in society.

Women’s roles have changed so much within the last couple of centuries. In the older years, women were the sole responsibility of taking care of the children, doing housework, and pretty much taking care of their husbands. “The Story of an Hour,” by Kate Chopin,” A Doll’s House, Henrik Ibsen, and “The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Gilman are all literature pieces talking about the roles women have in society. In “The story of an Hour, the main character is not happy in her marriage, and she finds out that her husband got killed, and she felt very free. In A Doll’s House, the main character is not happy with her marriage, because she feels that she is being treated like a childish, playful doll, and does not get any respect from her husband. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the main character is not happy with her marriage, because she feels that her husband has complete control over her, and she is going insane, because she feels trapped. All three of these literature pieces are related, and shows that the male is the most dominant one in their marriage.

“The Story of an Hour” is a short story that mainly talks about the main character not liking her role in society and how she was very unhappy with her marriage. It shows that often women are not always happy in their marriage or the roles they play in the marriage. She finds out that her husband had died in a railroad accident, and at first feels sadness, but then feels that she is free.

The characters in the story were Mrs. Mallard; who was the main character, Brently Mallard; who is the husband of Mrs. Mallard, Richards; who is Brently Mallard’s friends, and Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine. The setting of the story takes place in Mrs. Mallard’s home, where her sister Josephine ...

... this is not always a good thing. A marriage that has equal roles, and makes equal decisions, always seems to come out better in the end.

All of these plays had so many different things in common when it comes to women’s roles in society. So many men seem to think they have the dominant role in a marriage, and can take over. A lot of things have changed since then, and it is not always the man who makes the decisions, but the woman makes some major decisions as well.

    In society, there has always been a gap between men and women. Women are generally expected to be homebodies, and seen as inferior to their husbands. The man is always correct, as he is more educated, and a woman must respect the man as they provide for the woman’s life. During the Victorian Era, women were very accommodating to fit the “house wife” stereotype. Women were to be a representation of love, purity and family; abandoning this stereotype would be seen as churlish living and a depredation of family status. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" and Henry Isben’s play A Doll's House depict women in the Victorian Era who were very much menial to their husbands. Nora Helmer, the protagonist in A Doll’s House and the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” both prove that living in complete inferiority to others is unhealthy as one must live for them self. However, attempts to obtain such desired freedom during the Victorian Era only end in complications.

Reforms began in all areas throughout the 19thand early 20th centuries as women were gaining more and more rights and acceptance into everyday life. By the time the 20th century rolled around and throughout, no longer was it thought that women belonged in the home (although few still feel that way), yet many women began serving professional jobs as doctors, lawyers, and politicians. Now today some of the most successful people in the business world are women, as women have even began there own companies.

She must be cheerful and sweet and pretty, like a dainty little doll. The perfect woman in the eyes of society is exactly like a doll: she always smiles, always looks her best and has no feelings or opinions that she can truly call her own. She responds only to the demands of her husband and does not act or speak out of turn. A woman who speaks her mind or challenges the word of any man, especially her husband, is undesirable because she is not the obedient little doll that men cherish. Women who do not conform to the rules that society has set for them are downgraded to the only feature that differentiates them from men; their sex. Society’s women do not speak or think of sex unless their husband requires it of them. But when a woman fails to be the doll that a man desires, she is worth nothing more than a cheap sex object and she is disposed of by society.

    Since the beginning of time men have played the dominant role in nearly every culture around the world. If the men were not dominant, then the women and men in the culture were equal. Never has a culture been found where women have dominated. In “Society and Sex Roles” by Ernestine Friedl, Friedl supports the previous statement and suggests that “although the degree of masculine authority may vary from one group to the next, males always have more power” (261). Friedl discusses a variety of diverse conditions that determine different degrees of male dominance focusing mainly on the distribution of resources. In The Forest People by Colin Turnbull, Turnbull describes the culture of the BaMbuti while incorporating the evident sex roles among these “people of the forest”. I believe that the sex roles of the BaMbuti depicted by Turnbull definitely follow the pattern that is the basis of Freidl’s arguments about the conditions that determine variations of male dominance. Through examples of different accounts of sex roles of the BaMbuti and by direct quotations made by Turnbull as well as members of the BaMbuti tribe, I intend on describing exactly how the sex roles of the BaMbuti follow the patterns discussed by Freidl. I also aim to depict how although women are a vital part of the BaMbuti culture and attain equality in many areas of the culture, men still obtain a certain degree of dominance.
