The woman’s struggle for equality has been a long, hard process since the 1850’s and still persists into modern times. Women were brave enough to branch away from the societal norm of being a submissive female. Unfortunately, they were often ridiculed for their actions or dismissed (Donnaway). Although African American women would have an even tougher battle ahead of them. An African American female born into slavery around 1797, Sojourner Truth fought for the cause and made a lasting impact as an activist. (Butler). In 1851 Truth made a huge impact on the African American woman’s struggle with her speech entitled, “Ain 't I a Woman?” by describing her own struggle in a way that also explained all of their struggles. Like most African American’s born into slavery she never received an education and could not read or write. At the age of eighteen Truth married a fellow slave named Thomas and gave birth to five children. Truth would be sold four times before she eventually walked free after twenty-nine years of slavery in 1826. Once free, she moved to New York City until 1843, when she decided to change her name to Sojourner Truth and travel as an itinerant preacher. Three of the five sections of her speech dwell on the notion that women stand lower in social order than do men. The first ridicule of patriarchy began with the third paragraph as quoted earlier when Sojourner used a cup metaphor to explain her views by saying that just because some may have less than you, does not mean they do not deserve to have their fair share. The next critique of patriarchy follows in the fourth paragraph when Truth uses her biblical knowledge to put to shame the men’s usage of the bible for injustice.
Then that little man in black there, he says women can 't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn 't a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him.
