The theorist that I had decided to pick to write my essay about is Harriet Martineau. After doing some research, I found that she was very significant and also because she aimed to change the social stigma for women in the United States at that time. Harriet fought for the abolishment of slavery and did not believe in Capitalism because it caused women and children to be oppressed. Harriet was a radical and many people in power did not pay her much attention because she was a woman. According to the textbook, Harriet
Martineau was an English antagonist slavery and capitalism who translated the work of Comte so people could understand the importance of his perspective” (Vissing, 2011).
Mrs. Martineau articulates a comparative way to study
As a young girl she taught her servants how to read, write and keep up with everyday matters. The philosophers of her time helped form her foundation in her work in sociology and political economy.
I find Harriet Martineau to be influential because she was very smart and she was motivated to bring equality to people. She was self-taught and was very knowledgeable during a time when women were not supposed to be educated. The more I read on her the more I found her interested in her impact on the fight for the oppressed. In her times women was supposed to be in the home. They main job was running the house, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. Harriet was living during the times of slavery but she believed that equality is for everyone. Harriet Martineau I believe is one of the most inspirations to many women. What stands out to me the most is that she displayed that women are just as smart as men and her goal was that women has the same opportunities as men.

Most of Mrs. Martineau lectures came from the Comte, a French philosopher. She taught women and children that they must keep in mind that there are various types of understanding that goes through three stages of development. When going through these stages of evolution it should be acquired at different rates so it arrives together. She explains how people advancement would depend on the nature and understanding of the question that is being asked. She believed that the teachings was vital and held a great value to everyone.
Harriet Martineau is inspirational for me because she was one of the many women that help the fight on oppression that women and children faced. I believe that if it had not been for her and many others then women today would still be oppressed. In my opinion women are just as equally qualified for any situation that a man can do as long as she has the proper schooling and training and will to do the task or job at hand. I chose Harriet Martineau was because she was not afraid to stand for something that many people were afraid to stand up for during her time. I have daughters and I am glad that now they have choses that have been made available
