During the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, the role of working-class women became a burden to what one would call British National Identity. As one can note from Deborah Valenze’s book The First Industrial Woman, women who began to work in order to support their families were seen as a masculine because they would dress showing more skin. The new evolving identity of working class women became criticized not only by men but also by women of higher economic status. This would eventually lead to the first feminist wave in Britain from 1848 through 1920. This new wave in Britain was a reaction to the way working women had been put down by British society in the earlier period of the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, the ‘gentle lady’ of the Victorian Age became unacceptable, the role that domesticity was the right role to be played by women became a critique. The suffrage movement in many ways led women to embrace a new form of ‘masculinity’ in clothing. The working class woman’s ‘masculinity’ became one to be praised. One can begin to see this at the end of First Feminist wave in the 1920s when the flapper style became the new fashion. Society in Britain had become one of man v. woman, and women retaliated through fashion by adapting masculine style clothing to cover their curvaceous figures. Nevertheless, the Second World War’s impact on society brought with it a new ideology of Britain v. the outside enemy, which brought a revitalization of traditional women roles illustrated by the clothing. The following is an analysis on women’s clothing post the First World War and through the Second World War.

The 1920’s was an era of dramatic political and cultural change, where many Americans lived in cities rather than farms. Many inventors came to be noticed as new cars were invented and as music entered the entertainment industry. A new style of music was invented mainly in the African American community, creating the Harlem Renaissance; which was an evolution of music and entertainment in Harlem, New York City. The women of America began to evolve in the 1920s, adding new styles to our fashion industry and changing the way women dress, act, and are portrayed in society for generations. Women were viewed before the 1920’s as innocent housewives, who made little to no money, as they often relied on their husbands’ income.
The social perception of women has drastically changed since the 1950’s. The social role of women during the 1950’s was restrictive and repressed in many ways. Society during that time placed high importance on expectations of behavior in the way women conducted themselves in home life as well as in public. At home the wife was tasked with the role of being an obedient wife, caring mother, and homemaker. Women publicly were expected to form groups and bond over tea with a slice of cake. All the while government was pushing this idealize roll for women in a society “dominated” by men. Women also exhibited their newfound freedom by wearing traditional male clothing such as baggy trousers, men's jackets, vests, over-sized shirts, ties and hats.
Fashion is a popular trend, especially in styles of dress and ornament or manners of behavior. Fashion changed very drastically in the 1920s. It did not only change what people wore but it also influenced American life. Many people had a major influence on fashion during that time period. A lot of designers made clothing that was much more fashionable as well as functional. Generally, clothing was beginning to be made shorter to allow more room for movement.
If we didn’t have fashion then a lot of people wouldn’t have jobs because there are a whole bunch of fashion designers out there, also all of the celebrities wouldn’t have name brand clothing because there would be no way to make them because we wouldn’t have designers. Fashion of the 1920’s played a very big role in today’s fashion. Including the material our clothing is made out of also the styles of clothing we wear. Many things women wear today first came from fashion in the 1920's. Flappers, shoe styles, and accessories are a few things that we wear today have came from. Through the1960’s the boyish androgynous figure was once again becoming popular. Women were starting to be treated equally to men as they now had ‘greater independence, better qualifications and far wider employment opportunities than their predecessors, the little-girl ideal of the 1960’s endured, expressing the protest of women against their relegation to inferior roles in society and their treatment as sex objects’ (Thesander, M. 1997. p. 180). Women wanted to be liberated and to feel that they are equal to men so they no longer wanted to wear tight fitting lingerie and outer-wear garments.
The sixties were a time of growing youth culture and youth fashions, which had already begun in the late fifties. In the west, young people were benefiting from the postwar industrial boom, and had no problem finding work. With extra cash in their pockets, they were able to spend more and had begun to refashion themselves accordingly. This higher demand in the fashion business brought out a new generation of designers. The freedom of extra cash meant room for more imagination and creativity, bringing out new and provocative fashion ideas.
Throughout history, there were many things that influenced fashion and the ideal body image of the time. Things such as politics, and changes in social roles were some things that had an influence on the fashion of the day. One particular shocking thing that had influenced on the fashion around the 1800s were sickness and diseases. Not only were diseases and sickness caused by different fashion trends, but it set the tone for certain ideal body images and also influenced the fashion of the time.
During the year of 1943, it is said that nearly 65% of women made up the industrial workforce. The image is illustrating woman empowerment and the ability to be seen as equal as men. This specific propaganda poster, led to many changes in the workforce and societal alterations for women. Gender had a lot to do with this specific change in the workforce, it became the main focus of discussion. Many were shocked by the way women could perform in these industrialized settings. The whole purpose of the “We Can Do IT” phrase, was aimed at the women of the 1940s and would be left as remembrance of all that is achievable. As stated by J.V. Peluchette in his “Dressing to Impress” article, “It is likely that there are individual differences in attire-related beliefs and behaviors. Gender differences have received some research attention with regard to attire but results have been mixed”(J.V.PELUCHETTE). His research proves that the workplace certainly looked closer at what women are wearing rather than keeping clothing goals equal. Another interesting facet of this time period was the research that was done behind the articles of clothing that was worn. Although, it was mainly gender based around women, there was a time where researchers began to look carefully at the trends of clothing. A lot of women on the 1950s wanted their freedom to practice their sexual activities. Some were restraining from doing that because women were supposed to be conservative. Women were only to become wives and have children, that was the norms. However, some married women went against this normal activity. Even though they were not allowed to be with other women, some still find a way to be with their lovers. It seems like male lovers were always enhance more than females. The 1950s advertisement for men's shoes depicts women on the same level of a mans shoe, which at the time was looked at as where she belongs, the advertisement uses a females submissiveness, loyalty, and inferiority to her husband to promote the masculinity of the product. The different versions of girlhood are created through advertisements. In the 1950’s, the advertisements used for promotion had one thing in common, they used a woman to sell their product. Introduction Historically, multiple styles of dressing have been created during the last several decades, which played an important role in modern fashion in the UK. Everyone has a different and unique dressing style in their everyday life. Some styles are influenced by vintage styles which are attributing to the deep effects of old vogue, and another group of dressing styles are inclined into the fresh element. Despite those different styles, some of them have even evolved into the milestones in fashion history. To start this essay, it will introduce the evaluation of the first significant revolution of dressing style in the 1960s.
