The book Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is taken place in China during the time that society was going through some modernization but still stay associated with their ancient traditions and customs. Wang Lung’s, a poor young farmer, father reaches out to the Hwang family asking if they have an unused slave to marry his son since he has reached the age to be able to marry. The family agrees to sell him a twenty-year-old slave whose name is O-lan which then becomes his wife even though they hardly spoke or knew each other. Throughout the book we can see the unfair women perspectives that are bestowed upon females. The first way that illustrates how women are looked down upon is how they are forced to do things they do not even want to do. For instance, in the book O-lan is sold to Wang Lung without being asked if she wanted to or not. After that she is placed into an arranged marriage with him. She did not really have a say into if she wanted to marry him or not. Now a day’s arranged marriage are not accepted as before. Although liberal marriage is more common now because the person is not forced to marry someone they do not like or just met. In today’s society, we have more of a liberal marriage because we can choose the person we want to marry and love. Over many centuries, women have been treated as nothing more than an accessory and have received unfair treatment from men. In addition to being treated unfairly, they are also paid at a much lower wage than males when they are doing the same job. This unfair treatment of women has occurred for many years and can be seen in many parts of our society like in education, family, and work. This shows that O-lan is being helpful into financial success of her family to help Wang Lung. Over many years women have been seen by men as accessories and do not treat them fairly. Even though women do have rights and freedom, they are still not treated as equals by men. Women are usually seen as doing housework things but comparing to the book O-lan shows differently because she contributes to helping Wang Lung work on the fields.
