The book Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck is taken place in China during the time that society was going through some modernization but still stay associated with their ancient traditions and customs. Wang Lung’s, a poor young farmer, father reaches out to the Hwang family asking if they have an unused slave to marry his son since he has reached the age to be able to marry. The family agrees to sell him a twenty-year-old slave whose name is O-lan which then becomes his wife even though they hardly spoke or knew each other. Throughout the book we can see the unfair women perspectives that are bestowed upon females. The first way that illustrates how women are looked down upon is how they are forced to do things they do not even want to do. For instance, in the book O-lan is sold to Wang Lung without being asked if she wanted to or not. After that she is placed into an arranged marriage with him. She did not really have a say into if she wanted to marry him or not. Now a day’s arranged marriage are not accepted as before. Although liberal marriage is more common now because the person is not forced to marry someone they do not like or just met. In today’s society, we have more of a liberal marriage because we can choose the person we want to marry and love. Over many centuries, women have been treated as nothing more than an accessory and have received unfair treatment from men. In addition to being treated unfairly, they are also paid at a much lower wage than males when they are doing the same job. This unfair treatment of women has occurred for many years and can be seen in many parts of our society like in education, family, and work. This shows that O-lan is being helpful into financial success of her family to help Wang Lung. Over many years women have been seen by men as accessories and do not treat them fairly. Even though women do have rights and freedom, they are still not treated as equals by men. Women are usually seen as doing housework things but comparing to the book O-lan shows differently because she contributes to helping Wang Lung work on the fields. Many ancient laws and beliefs show that women from all around the world have always been considered inferior to men. However, as time went on, ideas of equality circulated around and women started to demand equality. Many women fought for equality and succeeded in bringing some rights. However, full equality for women has yet to be fulfilled. This issue is important because many women believe that the rights of a person should not be infringed no matter what their gender is, and by not giving them equality, their rights are being limited. During the periods 1840 to 1968, total equality for women did not become a reality due to inadequate political representation, economic discrepancy, and commercial objectification.
The issue of equal pay between genders is still a problem in today’s society. Not to mention the argument of equal pay between genders of different ethnicities and minorities. A white man no matter his age, is unfairly paid more than a black or Mexican man. As well as a white woman can be paid more than both a black or Mexican man, and her ethnic female colleagues. Women of color are paid less than their male counterpart, not to mention the gaping wide wage gap between women of color and a white man. There is an ongoing war on women in today’s society, but it has been cleverly disguised and been waged for so long that many people don’t even realize it’s still happening. Women have been fighting for equality for centuries. Though today, we may not be fighting for the right to vote, hold office, or own land, we are still fighting a quieter battle for respectful and fair treatment from the opposite sex. Men have long thought themselves superior to women in intelligence, social position, and physical abilities. In fact, it is such a long-held, ingrained belief that many men never think to question it. These stubbornly-held ways of thinking are far overdue for an upgrade.
Gender Discrimination is a topic that has been going on within our country for a long time. Women have never been treated equality as men. Women’s oppression is not just unique to our history alone. Different civilizations around the world have portrayed women despicably. In Japan during world war two, teenage girls were rounded up into sex camps. “An estimated one hundred thousand to four hundred thousand girls were forced to do sexual favors for Japanese soldiers, some of the girls were as young as 11 years old. They serviced up to 50 Japanese soldiers a day, while enduring beatings, starvation, sterilization and abortions. Gender roles continue to be an ongoing issue in modern society. The Good Earth displays how gender roles in Chinese culture affected men and women drastically. The radical difference between Lotus and O-Lan make a great example for the contrast. O-Lan and Lotus had extremely different relationships with Wang Lung on both sides of the spectrum ranging from a work force and luxury.

From the beginning of time, females have played a powerful role in the shaping of this world. They have stood by idly and watched as this country moved on without them, and yet they have demanded equal rights as the nation rolls along. Through the years the common belief has been that women could not perform as well as men in anything, but over the years that belief has been proven wrong time and time again. So as time marches on, women have clawed and fought their way up the ladder to gain much needed equal respect from the opposite sex. However, after many years of pain and suffering, the battle for equal rights has not yet been won. Since women have fought for a long time and proven their importance in society, they deserve the same rights as men.
With such a variance in rights and the way women were treated it is a glimpse into our very nature as humans. Both sexes play a role in our societies from mothers and home makers to pristesses. It is the very nature of female to bend and flex with the times and perservear. Each society has a different view of women and what role they will play in society. It is interesting to ponder the idea as to why certain culture hold women in such high esteem and some opress their women. Women have grown and diversified themselves over time and will continue to change the world. Holding a place in this universrse that is pecial and powerful no matter how society views them. As future societies come woemn will surely have some place in society wether it is good or bad only those societies may choose.

Equality for all sounds like a simple concept for everyone to live by, but it seems that even in today’s society around the world women are lacking the equal rights they deserve. Ever since we can remember in our history, women have always received the short end of the stick when it came to their rights. Right to vote, right to a job, right to equal pay, and the list can go on and on. There have been many attempts for women to receive the same rights as men, but not all have been successful. This is especially true in the workforce. The workforce is the main issue when it comes to equal rights for women in today’s society. Women have been mistreated in the working environment and have affected them socially, but throughout all of this there have been attempts to stop it.
The role of women in different civilizations, even though on different spectrums of the world, had many similarities and only a few differences. Women in these four civilizations: Greece, Egypt, China, and India faced many of the same hardships, struggles, and prejudices. Some of this treatment of women didn’t even end until present day (1920’s). In some of these civilizations women were able to rise up somewhat in their communities but it didn’t come without some kind of interference.
