Analysis Of The Play Doubt: A Parable

“Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone.” —Father Flynn. On October 2, 2015 at 7:30 P.M. in the Trahern Theatre, I went to see the play Doubt: A Parable. It was very successful at how the elements of the play brought it to life. It made you feel like you were actually a part of the whole play and not just an audience member. All the actors, scenery, costumes, lights, and sounds were very effective how it brought the play to life. The actor who portrayed Father Flynn was Zachery Schaflein; the way he represented that role was exactly the way I imagined the priest would perform. He played the role effectively in how he portrayed his character in each scene. In act one, scene one and six Zachery was giving a sermon to the church; he made the audience believe they were actually in a catholic church listening to the priest give his sermon for the week. He did not just stand behind the podium stiff as a board using the same old soothing voice; he would walk around, use hand gestures, and raise his voice during the scenes. Her acting was spot on; she used different tones in her voice while having conversations with the other actors and she made her personality very lively. For example in act one, scene five Allison made her voice sound like she was super nervous, when Sister Aloysius was confronting Father Flynn about Donald Muller, by making her voice become shaky and rasp. When she kept asking Father Flynn if he wanted more tea she would be jumpy in her seat; she would not sit still during this scene. Another illustration on how Allison convinced the audience on how well she can act, was in act one scene seven when she opened up to Father Flynn about her brother and how she cannot sleep anymore; it actually seemed like she was having a hard time by the way she let the audience see
