Romeo's Case Study

Mercutio, the nurse, and Friar Lawrence all one way or another responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, despite the fact that they are not equally blamed for it. If they are not that emotionally driven and think before their actions, Romeo and Juliet’s tragic deaths definitely would never happen.
The first one who held partial responsibility for causing the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend. In spite of the feud between Capulet’s family and Montague’s family in which she clearly knew of, she still deliberately supported Romeo and Juliet’s relationship instead of trying to break them off like she should. In fact, she actively acting as a messenger between Romeo and Juliet by sending Juliet’s letter to Romeo. She even helps Juliet to marry with Romeo by telling Romeo to come to the church where Juliet had waited with Friar Lawrence. To be critical, the nurse has a lot of advantage in term of stopping this relationship before it gets out of hand since as she served in Capulet 's family, she can easily report the affair to Lord or Lady Capulet, or tried to stop Juliet from getting contact with Romeo. Finally, the nurse showed no empathy toward Juliet 's love with Romeo when she knew of Romeo 's banishment and urged Juliet to better forget Romeo and marry Paris. If the nurse had not betrayed Juliet when Juliet was already so hopeless and emotionally unstable in hearing of Romeo 's banishment and tried to talk Juliet to find a way out of the situation, Juliet might be able to come to a wiser solution instead of faking her death that ultimately resulted in the tragic deaths of both star-crossed lovers. First and foremost, Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet in secret despite the fact that he is well aware of the existing conflicts between two families, Capulets and Montagues. Since he is a clergyman thus an educated member of the community, he should understand the consequences of Romeo and Juliet 's relationship, especially when he had seen how emotionally- driven and reckless these young lovers are, instead of helping them. He is also the one who illogically planned Juliet 's fake death and unsuccessfully send the message to Romeo about Juliet 's faked death through Friar John. If Friar Lawrence himself take an effort to go Mantua to have face-to-face communication with Romeo about the plan instead of assuming that the letter would get to Romeo by Friar John, Romeo would not misunderstand that Juliet is dead. In turn, he would not kill himself out of grieve from the death of Juliet. Finally, Friar Lawrence cowardly leaves Juliet by herself in the monument with Romeo 's corpse.
