To Be or Not To Be Confided by Tradition is the Question
Traditional ideas conflit Hamlet’s ideas about women and ways to treat them by experience. Therefore, understanding Hamlet’s thoughts about women can clarify the interpretive ideas in the play. Throughout the play Hamlet treats Gertrude and Ophelia differently due to their past, and for his own gain.
Hamlet is conflicted with the traditional ideas about women, and ways to treat them with experience. Even though traditions of the time period taught young men that women were objects and must do as the husband asks. Hamlet grew up with his father treating his mother as if the world revolved around her. Being exposed to a non traditional setting, Hamlet saw how to love, and had grew up with more modern ideas on how to treat women. Is making a reference to Ophelia, since Hamlet feels as if he has been rejected by her through the orders of her father Polonius. One example would be Laertes speaking to Ophelia of Hamlet “ he can only act with approval and consent of those whom he rules.”(Page 61 act 1 scene 3 line 119-120). Polonius is implying that as a prince Hamlet should not do what he thinks is right, and be confided by tradition and act as a puppet of royalty. Another example of Hamlet clarifying interpretative ideas is when Hamlet speaking to Polonius about Ophelia “don 't let her walk in the sun conception is a blessing, but not since your daughter may conceive watch my friend.( page 109 act 2 scene 2 line 196-197).
