Back in the day, the common household paraded around Nintendo’s latest gaming console, and goggled at every E3 unveiling. Shingeru Miyamoto, a once major gaming producer, had dominance over any other company, and ran competitors into the ground. Twelve years ago, Playstation stood no chance against the empire Nintendo built. Even when the Nintendo Wii entered market, Sony’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox360 initially lost profits while Nintendo raised millions (Kuchera). Nowadays, however, when comparing Nintendo to other gaming kings, the general public favors anything non-Nintendo. Gaming markets thrive off of hardcore gamers, while a fad only provides a short-term profit. 2008 holiday sales show impressive profits for Nintendo’s Wii. In fact, Sony and Microsoft combined couldn’t amount to the records Nintendo broke. Although some people qualified the reason for their high income because of a low price and better availability, hardcore gamers ultimately aimed for Microsoft’s and Sony’s products. Many Christmas shoppers bought the Nintendo Wii with included Wiisports, and then never bought another Wii game after (Leclair). As studies have shown, game companies grow from the hardcore gamers who don’t care which company makes the product, but rather which product provides the best experience. Nintendo, for a long time, knew what “best” meant. Nowadays, Nintendo can barely scrap together a valuable idea. Proof rests within the sales of Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox360. While the two companies initially lost profits during release, they now rack in bags of money while Nintendo continuously declares worse profit outlooks. Decades of top sales washed away when a perfect storm of competition, desires, and technological warfare outweighed the Nintendo Wii. Some claim Apple’s iPhones solely resulted in Nintendo’s loss, but other gaming systems with even pricier games didn’t suffer as much. Many attribute Nintendo as a fad product only Soft-core gamers who don’t want to spend their salary on buy, but the company still makes sales while fads, like Tamagotchi, died. Lastly, many say Nintendo’s failure is entirely because of bad hardware, but cheap prices make up for the lack of HDMI connection and smooth networking.
