“Hallo”,”Hola”, “Merhaba.” What comes to mind when someone says that they can speak another language? It is safe to assume that most of us are slightly impressed with that person. In America today there is a large portion of the population whom seem to have little interest and no inclination towards learning a second language; this is also true for many other parts of the world. People ask themselves why they should even bother themselves with such an arduous task. What many people do not realize it is that having the ability to speak another language makes them not only more marketable in the job market, but it also helps build cognitive skills.
The world is a large place, a large place with an incredibly high rate of competition. Ultimately, we grow up preparing ourselves to be integrated into the global society as functioning and efficient members. We all have had some version of the dream of having the best job with the best pay and having the ability to afford the finer things in life. Education, it is one of many; yet one of the most important determinants of realizing that dream life we all want. So why not learn another language to help give us an upper hand in the job market?
Globalization, regardless of location, is a reoccurring, unavoidable aspect of the job market. It is becoming a common necessity to conduct business with people who speak other languages. The language barrier is an impediment that employers are now seeking to rectify. Speaking to someone in their native language is a great complement to that person. Most people do not care enough to learn the language of the country they are visiting. Some travelers expect the people to already know their language to the place that their traveling to. This being said, the ones who actually know the language to the place that they are traveling to, can hold a special place in the local heart. If a child grows up learning two languages, he/she will have a greater appreciation for, not just one, but both languages that they grew up learning, knowing and respecting. Right now, imagine a person in a future job. More than likely that person will encounter somebody speaking a language besides their native tongue. As a result, these monolingual speakers are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who speak more than one language fluently. This disadvantage is crucial to realize since it is important to learn how individuals and the nation can be enhanced. Individually, when bilinguals bear in mind the fact that their ability to speak two languages helps their cognitive skills in strengthening development and function of attention, their self satisfaction should escalate. This is a blessing, not a hindrance. In America, people wrongfully look down upon foreigners as they arrive in the States, learn a second language, while also cling to their native language and cultural values. Monolingual Americans unjustifiably believe they have the advantage over these future bilinguals. To some people language is power and for others, the purpose of learning a new language is to bond closely with people who speak another language. Personally, I choose to learn languages because I am required to and learning useful languages can come in very handy. Learning languages can be hard for some and easy to pick up for some. Currently I speak 3 languages: English, Indonesian and Mandarin (excluding the Javanese dialect). Obviously, I had some struggles learning the languages, but some languages are easier to learn than another and there are different factors and explanations about why we pick up some languages faster and some languages harder.

Language is an important part of our lives. I remember when I arrived to USA I could speak a little English. I went to school to improve my language, reading and writing skills; even now I am learning my second language, without English I cannot survive in this new environment. Now I am raising my own kids and I want them to have this important skill, this privilege of knowing a second language, language of their parents and grandparents. By looking at studies of bilingual children, research shows how important it is for a child to learn a second language.
