In society, independent learners are those who seek to further their education to the next level. In the article, “Why We Are Looking at the ‘Value’ of College All Wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Christopher B. Nelson argues that people can’t compare economics with receiving a higher education. Individuals who look at college from an economic lens are viewing education the wrong way. Instead, individuals should look at the bigger picture which is gaining an education and taking in the knowledge. When having an education, people grow and expand their knowledge. By expanding and gaining knowledge from the experience of college, people are able to become independent learners. However, most people tend to start evolving into independent learners after leaving high school; from leaving high school, I started to evolve into an independent learner. As a college student, I am evolving into an independent learner because I am taking initiative with my work, setting goals to achieve, and challenging myself to think critically inside and outside the classroom.
As I am growing into an independent learner, I am taking initiative in my school work. Taking the initiative means that I am willing to put my all into a task. Using different methods of learning and studying will help myself succeed in life.Another way I am taking initiative within my work is going over my notes and making sure I understand the task during my free time. A better understanding is brought to my attention, in which I am making sure learning from the information. ...on challenges within their life and learn from their experience. “The educated graduate is an independent learner, able to seek out answers to whatever questions arise, and able to direct his or her own learning in accordance with the challenges that life presents in the circumstances of his or her own life.” By thinking critically and challenging myself, I would be able to grow into an independent learner because I am putting to the effort of wanting to do better.
Independent learners are those who want to further themselves by taking their education to the next level. Leaving high school, and going to college is the first step into evolving into becoming an independent learner. As a college student, I am evolving into an independent learner by setting goals for myself to achieve, taking an initiative within my work, and challenging myself to think outside the box.
