The purpose of golden rice is established through the idea that rice plants possess the ability to control machinery to synthesis beta-carotene. This machinery is active in the leaves but not in the seeds, with this theory scientist Peter Beyer was able to introduce 2 genes to the rice grains one from soil bacterium (erwinia uredovora) and one from the gene from daffodils (Zea Mays) or maize (Narcissus Pseudonarcissus). Doing so has allowed the synthesis of carotenoids, and the creation of Vitamin A in rice.

The organisation is clearly concerned about the state of heath that developing countries are in; this is the one of the main reasons why the golden rice projects is stated as “purely humanitarian” and have created a free licence for small holders in developing countries. The main concerns the organisations have stem from the fact that around 12 million children under the age of six die every year from the lack of micronutrients needed to sustain a healthy functioning body. The main micronutrients that are needed are vitamin A, iron and zinc. Taking into account this knowledge with the understanding that developing countries agriculture is based around the basic staple rice has allowed them to develop a solution. This solution is genetically modifying a grain of rice to have one of the main macronutrients (vitamin A) that is easily accessible to third world countries. Another alarming potential risk is the ability that genetically engineered foods can cause antibiotic resistance. The study of genetic modification of relies heavily on antibiotics throughout the experiments. In better understanding during an experiment not all cells will take in foreign genes in, so genetic engineers introduce certain types of antibiotic resistance to genes it host cells. Once the gene is introduced, the cells are given antibiotics and from this the cells that resist and survive are also the cells that have been able to take in the foreign gene.
Therefore overuse of such an experiment can potientially cause the development of antibiotic resistant pathogens. Ingesting GM foods can therefore create a antibiotic resistant super bug within our bodies.
