The Same is the Game
Everyone wants to have the same opportunity as the person next to them. The National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) draftees deserve the same opportunity. The NFL and MLB drafting process should be the same because the NFL draft is at a disadvantage.
The NFL draft has seven rounds; however, the MLB draft has 40 rounds (Stewart 1). Each NFL team gets a set number of draft picks that they must qualify for. They have an order to follow going from worst to best based on the play off scores (“NFL Draft” 2). The teams that get eliminated from the playoffs go to tie breakers until an order is determined (1). The MLB draftees’ are chosen based on previous seasons, and get to trade picks whenever they want (Normandin 5). The MLB draft goes losers to winners, including the swapping picks advantage (1). The disadvantage of trading picks is that it can get complicated when a player decides not to sign with the major league. Once a player decides to sign with a team, no picks can be swapped (Stepansky 4). If a player gets seriously injured, then the MLB team is allowed to pick a back up draft pick (Normandin 2).
Instead of making both drafting processes the same, they need to stay the way they are because NFL has some advantages; however, the MLB has this one major advantage (Stepansky 5). If the draft process changed, either the NFL or the MLB would have to change the amount of rounds each one has. The NFL are already at an advantage by having more publicity for their draft than the MLB (Stewart 1). Publicity also adds the fans’ willingness to attend the drafting process. NFL draft viewing is more popular than the MLB because the MLB draft is a long, drawn out process (Stepansky 5).

... add to the money flow by buying tickets to watch the drafts, and it can get very boring if one is not into that type or thing. (Stepansky 5). “In terms of venue, adding a bit of granduer to the draft would not be a bad idea. Perhaps holding the draft in the same city as the Super Bowl or the All-Star Game of that year. (Stepansky 5).
Most do not think of the challenges that one faces when trying to join a major league sport. The players’ must all work hard, and really want the opportunity in order to achieve their goals. One has to make sure that they do not waste their time if they really do not want that position on a major team. The NFL and MLB drafts have many flaws; however, they have great similarities that influence people to like one or the other. The drafts should be the same because every single person wants the same opportunity that another person gets.
As Mr. Frank Supovitz said, NFL Draft is a business meeting that became television show that became a live event. And then he added:“ the live event piece
Spendthrift, the perfect connotation of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) economy and how any one team can dominate free agency and the player market. As long as they are financially superior to the rest of the league, they will remain on the upper edge of talent. Unlike the other three major sports leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA,) the MLB presents one key underlying feature…the lack of a salary cap. A salary cap, or lack of salary cap in any sport, can do one of two important things: create parity, or create Darwinism amongst small market teams. If a salary cap is to exist in baseball, a sense of parity may arise leaving all teams with equal chances of landing big name free agents.
Under the protection of Major League Baseball’s (“MLB”) longtime antitrust exemption, Minor League Baseball (“MiLB”) has continuously redefined and reshaped itself according to Baseball’s overall needs. But while MLB salaries have increased dramatically since the MLB reserve clause was broken in 1975, the salaries of minor league players have not followed suit.
A salary cap in pro sports is the amount of money every team in a league can spend on all of the players on its roster in one year. Major League Baseball does not have a salary cap. The reason for a salary cap is to keep teams competitive and not have just two or three outstanding teams that dominate everyone. Another reason leagues like the National Football League and the National Basketball Association have a salary cap is it is fair and gives teams an equal chance to get players which can make a large impact on their team by using their skill and experience. Salary caps also keep players from receiving contracts which give them an extremely large undeserved salary. This is why I am for a salary cap in Major League Baseball.
sit the bench every year and not play at all. Players should try their best to get drafted and
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
Too many college athletes are given the chance to go into a professional draft that doesn't require the athlete to complete all four years of college and earn a degree. This is a problem because athletes lack the college experience that will get them ready for real life situations as they carry out their sports career. In college they will learn skills and have extra time to be better prepared. Without staying in college for fours athletes won’t see that theres more options for them besides sports. It will be hard for them to see if they have other interests besides sports.
Twenty-five million dollars made per year. Over one hundred fifty-four thousand dollars made per game. Over forty-seven thousand dollars earned per at bat. Sounds a little ridiculous, does it not? That is what current Texas Ranger shortstop Alex Rodriguez earns to play the game of baseball (azcentral.com). Baseball is a game that children have been playing in schoolyards and fields for the past one hundred years. It may not be a game anymore. On the Major League level it has become a business. This is where the problem starts.
A mock draft is a procedure according to which you make an assumption based on rankings as to when a player will be selected. A mock draft is beneficial because it gives you an idea of when players will be chosen. Also, on draft day, a fantasy player must make their selection within a certain period of time. So, by participating in a mock draft, you will be prepared when you are on the clock and, thus, not make ill-advised selections. Look at your draft number selection and see the players who might be available when you choose. After the mock draft, you should be able see what your team could be like.
...l playoffs should be expanded from 4 teams to 8 teams because: it gives more teams a chance to compete, it makes the schools more money for school funds, and it gets the players more NFL attention and more help. These players are trying to make a career out of what they love the most and that is football. By expanding the playoffs they will have a better and longer career. Also schools will be able to buy more supplies, hire more teachers, or do whatever they want with the money the playoffs will make them. The 8 team system will really benefit the smaller less hyped and less well known schools because the 8 team system should allow a small school or 2 in every year and so that would help their players receive more attention. So I ask you this question again: Wouldn’t it be easier to pick your favorite 8 types of candy instead of just your favorite 4 types of candy?
When looking into the history of our culture, there are many subtopics that fall under the word, “history.” Topics such as arts and literature, food, and media fall into place. Among these topics reside sports. Since the beginning of time, sports have persisted as an activity intertwined with the daily life of people. Whether it is a pick-up game of football in the backyard, or catching an evening game at the local stadium, sports have become the national pastime. According to Marcus Jansen of the Sign Post, more specifically, baseball is America’s national pastime, competing with other sports (Jansen 1). Providing the entertainment that Americans pay top dollar for, live the role models, superstars, and celebrities that put on a jersey as their job. As said in an article by Lucas Reilly, Americans spend close to $25.4 billion dollars on professional sports (Reilly 4). The people that many children want to be when they grow up are not the firefighters or astronauts told about in bed time stories. These dream jobs or fantasies have become swinging a bat or tossing a football in front of millions of screaming fans. When asked why so many dream of having such job, the majority will respond with a salary related answer. In today’s day and age, the average athlete is paid more than our own president. The cold hard facts show that in professional sports, the circulation of money is endless. Certain teams in professional baseball and football are worth over millions of dollars. Consequently, the teams who are worth more are able to spend more. The issue that arises with this philosophy is virtually how much more? League managers, team owners and other sports officials have sought out a solution to the surfacing problem. Is it fair to let...
Information Technology has quickly became an everyday part of life. It is used in almost every aspect of our lives. It used at home to check e-mail, send text messages, and surf the web. It is used at work for networking and even many modern telephone systems. In many cases IT is simply a part of our day. Major League Baseball is no different. The league has also become very active in the IT world. It is used in almost every single aspect of the game, as well as the business. If you look back at baseball through the ages, it is easy to see just how much it has changed. The trick for Major League Baseball was they knew they had to advance to keep up in today’s world. However, at the same time, they knew that fans loved the game of baseball because of its history. Baseball has a legendary past that is appealing to fans. They want the modern technologies without losing the vintage appeal. Major League Baseball has done just that. They have become one of the most technologically advanced sports in America. Everything from how tickets are purchased all the way to just how the games are broadcast, it has all changed dramatically.
What are many differences between the NFL and NBA? In the NBA, rarely does a surprise team win the championship. There is a reason why Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Andrew Luck always have their teams in super bowl contention. In basketball – a contrast to the way things were years ago when centers controlled the flow of the game – a player at any position can
The National Football League is made up of 32 teams that were once founded in 1920 by a group of people who helped form the league. In the beginning the league wasn’t really structured to what it is now. Teams will just play and no playoff games, seeding’s, or the game itself matter because not only was the game was overshadow by America’s past time baseball, but it was difficult because the college game was established as well. Owning a team was extremely hard because owner’s will spent large amounts of cash and participate in bidding wars for players. Fast-forward to today’s day and age it is safe to say the NFL may be the most brutal and exciting game to play. Rule’s and norms are intact for teams to do things more ethical. Money is what really drives this business and of course constant advertisement to promote its brand. With some of that revenue, the NFL has opened a program called NFL: Play 60. The purpose of this program is to encourage kids to be physically active for 60 minutes in a day to reduce America’s child obesity. The NFL has been successful because in 2010 the first lady Michelle Obama announced it would be teaming up with NFL PLAY 60 as a health imitative for children. This was a great move for the brand because The First Lady’s office and...
NFL players need an education in case of injuries or if they can’t play for any reason. Players can have a degree in any type of subject. If a player wants to play in the NFL, he has to attend a college or a university that has a good football program. Some players come from high school but most players come from a four year college (Field 11). If you have a son that is going to be in the NFL who wants to play linemen, he has to be about 6’8” tall and weigh around 350 lbs. Players have to know the game. They can’t hope to be a NFL player if they don’t understand how to play the game (Green 174).
