Students who go to college undecided spend an average “$9,139 per year in tuition alone” at an in-state, four-year public university (Uebel). This depicts students attempting to attend school not because they have an idea of their intended career, but it shows what students are expected to do. These students are spending money on classes, possibly not needed for their future career. Students should have the chance to look into various majors. This will help students to take classes corresponding with their future career. Not only are students wasting money, they are also wasting time. The students who are just taking core classes can be researching and exploring multiple majors, but instead are focusing on classes that may not be needed. Students who are knowledgeable of their future career are more likely not to waste time. When I began my senior year, the number one thing which people asked me was where I was going to college. Whether they actually knew me or not, that would be the first thing they asked once they found out I was in the final stretch of my high school career. In a current news release, The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that, “Of the 2.9 million youth age 16 to 24 who graduated from high school between January and October 2014, about 68.4 percent were enrolled in college in October” (BLS Economic News Release from April 2015). When a student graduates high school, most of them intend to continue on to college. They have the idea that, while there, they can break away from all the general classes and just focus on what they want to learn. General education classes should not be required because a majority of the information learned has already been covered in past years. Education Week reported in the “Metropolitan Life Survey of the American Teacher 2000” that seventy-one percent of students state their post-high school plans as a four-year college (Eduacation Week, 2000). The fact is seventy-five percent of Americans youth do not graduate from college (Starr, 1998).
