WHY STUDENTS CHEAT
The problem of why students cheating are a big dilemma in our society now a day. Many educational institutions or private colleges have been facing for years. It is an old misconduct that students bring since they were in elementary school because nobody wants to be the second in the class. There are many organizations that have done research to prove the amount of students that cheat. They have found much kind of reasons why students feel the necessity to commit fraud.
“ According to Gary Niels ’ most young people cheat at least once in their high school career’,3 Top Reasons Why Students Cheat”. Primary, most of the students who cheat by copying from other students, they do not do it because of lack of knowledge .They do it because they do not want to put enough effort in their studies or just because they don’t have enough time to prepare for the exam. So when a student is caught cheating it can cause them to lose all credibility with the professor and most of the time an “F” automatically. Sometimes the professor don’t follow the institution policy and bring the students another opportunity. It is also the origin of a big problem because they are lying to themselves thinking that they have learned sufficient to demonstrate their ability when they have to work in the field.
Another factor to take into consideration is that student may cheat when they are under stress. Some students have Full-time School, work at the same time as a part time and also have family obligations. This excess of duties and responsibilities causes loss of efficiency and capacity to finish the schoolwork. Another thing, college students have been caught using instant messengers such as Skype, Facebook, Instagram and Yahoo in order to share test answers with friends. They also use the internet to buy essays for the writing class in college and thus improve they grades .Then the majority of students that cheat do so to improve their chances of success in the future. They believe that good grades will get them into a prestigious college or university and in this way they will improve their chances of getting better jobs. In conclusion, there are many reasons why the students cheat, but that only lead they to failure in the futures because for me is better a “C” with sacrifice and dedication than “A” with cheating.
Cheating is a rising issue throughout the educational system. It is an unfair and immoral method to achieve higher marks on an exam or a better essay score. William Chace discuses in his article, “A Question of Honor”, how well students keep up to being academically honest. Chace’s article is very effective due to the crucial points of logical reasoning, pressure, and cheating itself. He utilizes logos and pathos to appeal to his audience. These arguments are demonstrated in the essay that connect to the question of are students cheating and why they do it.
Almost every student has cheated at one point or another for some reason they use to justify it and they could be any one of these forms of cheaters. Although all these types of cheaters will attempt to rationalize their cheating with various excuses and reasons there is no real justification. They all know it is the wrong thing to do, but will cheat anyways as they can get away with it and it will create the illusion of greater intelligence for themselves and that is a problem for the youth of America. It will make students learn to cheat better instead of actually learning the material assigned to them, resulting in a less intelligent generation.
That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.
Some students are bombarded with assignments and tests which are sometimes due in short period of times. I have recently interviewed a friend of mines, second-year medical students at the University of West Indies Mona, who said the workload is heavy but manageable once you organize yourself properly. But of course, this is his opinion, to others, it may not be that easy. We asked him, “Have you ever cheated?” To this day, the answer is yet to come. I decided to interview a family member this time, a Lawyer, who graduated from two prestigious universities, Stanford University and Harvard University. She remembered the workload she faced while studying, the stress it brought. She admitted to cheating on two tests in her university life and regret that she ever did. She further went on and said cheating is a choice, no matter the situation you should work hard and accept the grade you get because that is what you worked for. With the workload being too heavy, some students would only work towards the requirement needed to pass the class other that trying to completely understand the lesson being taught. How bad has cheating become over the years, the numbers in some cases are mind-boggling. In today’s day and age the amount of college students cheating is numbered to have maintain a steady figure of about 75 percent. (Lang, 2013) Cheating has been around since the beginning of time, some of the reasons behind most of the prolific cheaters are centered on what seems to be three main issues plaguing our society. Cheaters be it young or old, all seem to have what I call the “Big Three” in common. In my research on cheating, there were three things that continued to stick out, such as; procrastinating, the pressure to make the grade and it is easier to cheat rather then to do your own work. To the answer the question why college students cheat, we must first understand why, in order to find a solution on how to help avoid this continuing going forward. After reading this paper you will see that cheating has become prevalent in college, caused by a need to get better grades with less original work being done eventually the ends don't justify the means.
Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). To simplify everything mentioned above; students are inclined to cheat in school when they are disinterested in the subject material and or are overwhelmed by in assignment or finally the result in a poor teacher. Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.
But one question that is being asked is why students get to that point of risking everything that they have worked for. What can be a way of preventing students from using technology to cheat? Some reasons that can be mentions for the cause of a student having to cheat are: getting a good grade, lack of time to do the assignments, not being able to study on time and or just being lazy and not willing to put fort the effort.
Academic knowledge is the basis on which future prosperity, and financial security has been determined. As a consequence, students feel inclined to perform above average in school. Now, as students perform less and less, they sink to obtain good grades by cheating. This method to acquire the desired grades will only harm the student, instead of the imagined result. Prompted by a child’s inability to perform basic tasks throughout his education , academic cheating spawns numerous negative consequences.
The first cause as to why students cheat is because they are lazy. It happens all the time, where students go home from school, have a snack, watch television, take a nap, play some video games, and just keep saying that they will do their homework later. The next thing they know it eleven o’clock at night and time to go to bed, but no homework was accomplished. The student keeps pushing back the assignment until the last minute and the last minute is not enough time. This is also known as procrastination. The student does not want to fail, but they were too lazy to do their own work, so they ask to copy the work from a friend that did the work. I once said something to a guy about how this was cheating and he told me that he was, “using his resources wisely”. Another time I asked a student next to me to stop copying my answers in class and he told, “Then you shouldn’t let me see your answers”, he blamed his cheating on me. One time when I was in seventh grade in my ecology class we had to put together a presentation with a partner. My partner was a close friend at the time, and our topic was solar power. ...Almost every student nowadays can admit to cheating at some point in their educational career, but motives as to why they cheat vary and can’t be narrowed down to one reason. There are many excuses as to why all levels of students chose to cheat no matter how wrong or unexpected it is. Cheating is a large problem, but members of universities and schools can discourage it and try to prevent it as much as possible. Not only should it be frowned upon, but it also should be a priority to make it next to impossible to do. Advisers can reduce the temptation of cheating by significantly decreasing the amount of true and false and multiple choice questions on exams and quizzes. Also by understanding the students social and parental pressures in a person at that age’s life is important and contributes to decreasing the amount of students cheating in schools and universities.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
This form of cheating occurs more often than it should because students may not feel confident in their own work; they are constantly being reminded by society that they must do their best and receive the highest academic achievements. So why has society shamed students for taking such actions when society is partly to blame for the situation. But society is not to blame alone; students themselves are also held at fault, because it is their self-doubt and lack of time management that result in them plagiarizing. If students had the experience of submitting actual personal work, they would understand that being praised by their peers is more appreciable and could add to their overall self-worth. Students would also be proud of the grade they receive because it is one they truly deserve for their hard work and not for the work what someone else has already done. Students do not see how easy they could commit plagiarism without knowing they are plagiarizing. It is as simple as using a quote and not giving credit to those who deserves it. Students also do not seem to know that there are different forms of plagiarism, that there is not just one, but five types of
We might want to first follow that question with another question. What is cheating and why do so many people do it? Most people would agree that cheating is deceitful and one who obtains answers by cheating is not practicing good integrity. We could further add that cheating also prevents the student from having to put in long hours of studying and preparation. Recent technology has made this “time saving method” even more efficient.
The above discussion shows that there are many effects of cheating in exam. Therefore, schools should come up with strategies on how to reduce cheating in schools. The teachers can inform the students about the effects of cheating in exam. They should also come up with harass punishment if a student is caught cheating. This will reduce the cases of cheating, and students will be fully equipped for the job market. Therefore, students should know cheating in exams is bad.
