It is disappointing in today’s society that STDs has been looked over. The STD’s rate in young adults has been increasing as time passes. Young adults should be the most concerned in the United States, since STDs rate have been drastically increasing for them. This health inconsistency is due to many factors; this paper will be discussing the behavior, growth of different types of STDs, STD-related stigma, and prevention of STDs among young adults. STD awareness is important for this age group so protection is needed to help keep these teenagers and young adults healthy and help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Young adults between the ages of fifteen to twenty-four contract half of all new sexually transmitted diseases (STD) recorded, also in sexually active females, one in four have been exposed to an STD (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) 2016). The occurrence of STDs among young adults in the United States in 2007 was that 1.1 million was diagnoses with them (Dembo et al., 2009). Over 7.5% of STDs have increased during 2006 (Dembo et al., 2009), the highest between the ages of fifteen to twenty-four within the past year STDs have increased in testing positive, males increased to 37%, females increased to 70% (Cunningham et al., 2009). As of today, the largest increase of STDs among young adults had been researched a rate of fifty point one million percent STD between 2006 and 2014 (CDC, 2015). Individual level interventions are essential when creating sexual health related interventions that target college aged students. Interventions targeting the individual level of the social ecological model are devised to make an impact on the individual’s knowledge, perception, and self-efficacy, among other factors, in regard to the behavior being changed (Glanz & Rimer, 2005). To find the relevant literature, the following search terms were referenced in both PubMed and Google Scholar: “STI”, “Screening”, “Behavior”, “Knowledge”, “Chlamydia”, “Students”, and “College”. This literature review focuses on interventions that targeted behavior changes in individuals in relation to a variety of STIs, including chlamydia, the outcome of interest.

Two drastic Emergency Room cases were handled in 1998 at Mary Washington Hospital. Concerned mothers brought their 12 year old daughters into the hospital thinking they were suffering from severe stomach pain or even appendicitis…both girls were actually in labor (Abstinence, 2002). The United States has the highest teen pregnancy, birth, and abortion rates in the Western world (Planned Parenthood, 2003). Are teens getting enough knowledge on sex and how to prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies? Another heartbreaking statistic is that teenagers have the highest rate of STDs of any age group, with one in four young people contracting an STD by the age of 21 (Sex-Ed Work, 2003). Is sex education really working in school? Or do we need to change the type of curricula that is taught? There is no question that sex education should be taught in schools, but the question is how? The purpose of this paper is to determine which curricula of sex education should be taught in schools to be most effective in lowering STD and pregnancy rates among teenagers.

In America, a significant problem we should look at is regarding sexually active young teens. It seems that almost every teen is sexually active. They are having sex at such a early age. A question that rings in our minds, is do they truly even know what sex is? Growing up, Catholic teachings instructed myself to wait until marriage. They say premarital sex is a sin. Now, not only are churches teaching abstinence, but, schools as well. Premarital sex is a important growing problem: that usually results in a unwanted pregnancy, in some cases; forced abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, ultimate emotions of remorse. Sexual relations among teens is a problem not only for them, but possibly their children and America as a whole.

There will be a domino effect passing viruses down from generation to generation if something does not change. It is a parent’s job to want the best for their children, education, health and knowing all about everything that can change their lives drastically. More sex education in schools could change the direction that people’s lives are heading.
