Some may wonder, what exactly is a school uniform? A school uniform is a uniform that students wear to represent a certain school or wear for the safety purposes of a school. Modern day uniforms are normally just a solid color polo shirt and some khaki or black pants with closed toe shoes. Most people, when they hear the words school uniforms they automatically think of a plaid skirt and some ugly shirt with a jacket to match it. All students will be in the same clothing so it would be easy to tell between a student and an unauthorized visitor. Violence in a school will demolish the environment for the students and cause a negative effect on the student’s motivation to learn. In an unsafe environment, teachers can’t teach the students to their full potential and the students can’t learn to their full potential. King mentions that a child who feels safe in school may perform better academically. Those students who do not feel safe in school may not learn to their full potential and will not do so well in school. Some may seek for ways to skip school because they feel unsafe. For example: I was picked on in elementary school because my parents didn’t go out and buy me the clothing that was considered “popular” at my age. Being in fifth grade, one wouldn’t expect to be picked on because of the clothing that they wore but some children are just raised to think they are better than others because of the clothes they wear.
