Leave them alone, freedom is coming Two living human beings can be happy together, whether it is friendship or even something more than a friendship. When two people come together, they come together for love and companionship. Who has the right to deny anyone of that Earthly desire of loving the same gender? Not one human being on this earth has the authority to deny someone the right to love someone. Since the beginning of the existence of marriage, heterosexual relationships have been given the right by society to hold hands in marriage and have the freedom to love. Society accepts their decision and embraces their love from dating shows to movies. Moreover, their sex, at present, holds no bearing as to whether or not two people should exist in matrimony. The priest or whomever performing the service a desiring couple, in many religious communities, has questions that he or she poses to the willing couple. In addition, if they fail to meet those expectations, they are then at the urge by the ceremonial leader as to whether or not they may continue with the “marriage”. In this essay I will argue how they are benefiting society and the discrimination that they are facing and why same sex couples should have the freedom to love and marry to their partner. Can you imagine how it would feel if you were told you could not marry the one you love? Many homosexual couples are facing this mayhem in their life. But did you know that this is a form of discrimination? That’s right. There are many homosexual couples being denied the right to marry because of their sexual orientation. Throughout the recent history of America, gay marriage has always been an issue. With the different views and morals everyone has on the subject, it makes it hard for individual states to determine what side they should be on. In 1983 a Harvard Law School student, Evan Wolfson, wrote a thesis stating the rule of marriage equality. Justices concluded that gay couples were entitled to the legal benefits of civil marriage; and most crucially in the Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts, whose favorable ruling, in a suit by lawyer Mary Bonauto and the Boston-based Gay and Lesbian Advocated and Defenders, led to the nation’s first bona fide same-sex marriages…” (“Gay Marriage turns 10 and Credit Should Be Spread around- The Boston Globe). On May 17, 2004 Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriages. In June of 2013, California legalized gay marriages, which helped their large LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered) community. (“History and Timeline of the Freedom…”). The two texts examined within, present the opposing extremes of views regarding gay and lesbian marriage. The first text entitled Let Gays Marry by Andrew Sullivan examines the intricacies of same sex relationships and why homosexual couples should be allowed to publicly show affection for one another. The second text that will be examined is titled Leave Marriage Alone written by William Bennett. Bennett gives his views on why couples of same sex nature should not be allowed to engage in marital relations. These two authors, although very different, each has a view of the ideals of marriage, and how it should be presented to the public.
Currently, only 13 countries offer rights for members of the LGBT community. Within those countries, few offer equal rights such as health care, marriage rights, and adoption to LGBT members. Many people around the globe would agree that these rights, along with all other rights granted to heterosexuals, should not be granted to these members of the LGBT community. One prevalent notion is that being gay, or being included in the LGBT community, is unnatural. This notion is simply incorrect; everyone, no matter their gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation does, in fact, deserve the same liberties as their heterosexual counterparts. Being a member of the LGBT community has no negative effect on the lives of others unless those people view heterosexuality in a negative light, allowing it to bedevil them, and ultimately change the way they live their life. The recognition of same-sex marriage is a political, social, and religious issue. Because of this same-sex marriage is a very controversial topic. Legal acknowledgement of same sex marriage is commonly referred to as marriage equality. Many advocates of marriage equality argue that laws restricting marriage to only heterosexuals discriminate against homosexuals. On the other hand advocates against same-sex marriage argue that it would undo long-standing traditions and change the meaning of marriage in a damaging manor. In this essay I will be arguing for same-sex marriage. The arguments mentioned as well as others will be discusses throughout this paper.
