Adoption of a Dog: Giving a Chance

TOPIC: Why people should adopt rather than buy a dog

GENERAL PURPOSE: To persuade

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade my audience to adopt dogs rather than buying

because they are being abused at puppy mills for the pet trade

THESIS STATEMENT: Anyone can always think about buying a dog from a pet store

without knowing the dark secrets, however, the best way to find

a companion is through adoption from a shelter

Introduction

I. As one might ask, “How much is that doggie in the window?” Dogs have always

been known as being trusty and ideal companions, however, when taking all

things into consideration, is it right to adopt or buy a dog?

II. Imagine a little boy and his mom leaving Wal-Mart with several shopping bags. The

boy is very bored after shopping with his mom. However, he sees a pet store next to

Wal-Mart, and he brightens up. Today, they have pug puppies for sale! Instantly the

boy’s boredom vanishes and he begs his mom to go inside the store. Once inside, an

energetic pug puppy behind the glass wall looks at them with an innocent look.

Immediately, the mom and son fall in love with him and soon, they leave the store

with an exciting purchase. In reality, this isn’t very hard to imagine. In fact, this is an

all-too-common occurrence. (Attention getter)

    Splashed across the news feed on bing.com is a sensational story about a mother who bit the ear off a pit bull that was savagely attacking her 2-year old daughter. Story headline: “Mother acted on pure instinct when she punched the dog in the mouth and bit off its ear when it attacked her little girl…both mom and daughter are recovering—and the brutal beast has been put down” (nydailynews.com). This “vicious beast” is the criminal and the mother is no-doubt a hero. There’s no mother out there that would have done the same thing however, the way this article explains the story is sensationalized, the author clearly meant to demonize this dog. Stories like this have cast a shadow over the lowly pit bull breed and caused entire communities to take up pitchforks and push for legislation to ban the pit bull from existence. Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) is a quick solution to the public frenzy created after a media-reported dog attack. However, BSL is rapidly proving to be ineffective. Counties are finding that BSL is too costly, it provides the public with a false sense of security, and it does not address animal abuse, even inadvertent abuse by loving owners.

Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. The 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered, while 78 percent of dogs and 88 percent of cats are not spayed or neutered, in 2009 Statistics from animal shelters in 55 counties in WV (West Virginia) shows that nearly 54% of all animals entering shelters are euthanized, The euthanasia rates ranged from the lowest at 5% to the highe...
