According to Fablo, a 10-year-old called in a fake bomb threat to his school. A 15-year- old snips a stereo from a store to resell. A 13-year-old sexually assaults an 8-year-old neighbor over a two year period. A 17-year-old takes a gun to school and executes numerous pupils and teachers. These four scenarios should be pondered by today’s society. Are children delinquent because of their parents or their peers? Whether they are influenced by peers or their parents do not enforce appropriate behavior it should always come back to the parents. Parents are the ones who “should” be in the lives of their children the most. Parents should be the most influential people. If they are not doing what they are supposed to as a parents there are consequences for it. We do not have a disciplined society, we need to get disciplined. We need to ensure there are consequences” (McCartney, Branville). Children behave the way they see fit. If a child lives in an unstable home where his/her parents do not enforce appropriate behavior the child will not display appropriate behavior in public. DNA Leader Branville McCartney makes another good point by saying, “We need to catch these things from young. A parent won’t be saying ‘my good son’ if they are found liable for their son’s actions” The root of every problem starts at home and if the problem is not corrected our society will be doomed. When parents decide to enforce appropriate behavior in their children we will begin to see a positive domino effect in our society. After reinforcing appropriate behavior in the youth we will see an increase in the protection and control parents have over their children. Parents would begin to reinforce appropriate behavior, parents would have more control and protection over their children and we would see a decrease in bullying and cyberbullying. In the Pocono Mountains of Northern Pennsylvania, Cameron Kocher lethally shot his seven-year-old friend with a high powered hunting rifle. Kocher was playing video games with the girl prior to the shooting. She told him that she was better than him at the game, then went outside with her other friends to ride snowmobiles. Kocher’s parents would not let him ride snowmobiles with the rest of the group. He went to his father’s gun cabinet, retrieved a hunting rifle, loaded it, pointed it out the window of their home, and shot the girl in the back as she and a friend rode by. There is no information on Kocher’s background, but it could be assumed that there is the possibility he was raised in a “violent” home. He may have watched his dad shoot animals and bring them home and thought nothing of it when he shot and killed his seven-year-old friend off the back of a snowmobile in March 1989.
