Recommended: differences between male and female communication
Many people would agree that men and women are complete opposites. Our physical appearances, actions, and behavioral patterns are frequently contrasted by researchers and the general population. However, with modern day feminism, and what some would call, a gender revolution, it can be difficult these days to hastily stamp labels and categorize men and women. On the other hand, it would be incorrect to deny the fact that there are a few conspicuous behavioral patterns which are known to appear within certain sexes, many believe that this is the reason why men and women tend to miscommunicate and have issues with the opposite sex. Regardless of sex or gender identity, no two humans think the same or behave the same; This is what makes each human being unique. At times men and women indeed have difficulty understanding each other. However, I would say that instead of blaming the opposite sex, we should simply comprehend that we all differ from each other due to our many unique learning experiences.
If a person were to ask a random woman on the street to describe the way her husband communicates to her, she would likely say he is, “straight forward” and tends not to communicate at all in their relationship. She may also feel as though he does not listen to her. According to Deborah Tannen, this is a common misconception of men, and most men tend to listen, but differently than women do. To elaborate on this idea, Tannen refers to this as “silent attention”, where men remain quiet while listening to others in order to concentrate on the subject matter. (424) In addition to the misconception previously listed, it has been theorized that men also aim for different conversational goals than women. While Tannen has said that men create c...

...ilical cord. Yet, it is still true that men and women behave differently, and this is because they tend to socialize with their own gender; Which has been taught certain patterns on how to communicate. Those groups continue with their own patterns in a never-ending cycle. However, none of these women or men choose to follow every pattern and that is why not all men get along with all men and the same for women. This is because although they encountered the groups as a child, they had other impacts in their life which affected them drastically. Thankfully we have this system which creates wonderful combinations of unique and fascinating people that keep the Earth in balance. With every person, we meet, we learn from each other and learn that no one is the same as another. This is what keeps the world in colorful motion instead of in a grey box with uniform ideology.
We all have a certain way of communicating that seems evident and natural to us, so we can be shocked, frustrated, or even sadden when someone misinterprets us. Interacting with other people is part of our daily lives, yet men and women have different styles of communication and behavior. Some of the major differences between men and women are how they express emotion, affection or intimacy, and communication. Women tend to be more emotional and express more affection, whereas men are far less emotional and express less affection. Women regard intimacy as talking face-to-face; however, men regard intimacy as working or playing side-by-side. Women tend to ask more questions when communicating while men ask fewer or no questions at all. These
In a marriage women are the ones that look for a good male counterpart to communicate with, and if the husband is not into communication it can lead to divorce. This was proven in research stated in the article by Deborah Tannen “Most women want their husbands to be first and foremost conversational partners” (101). For example in Catherine Kohler’s research it is stated that “Few of the men gave lack as communication as the reason for their divorces” (102). This proves that men don’t find the need to be a good communicator. Women always get mad at the men for not being that good of conversationalist but, are the men really to blame. If men find communication as important as women they would communicate better. Many men believe that women lowered their expectations for the men they wouldn’t be as disappointed. Women need to accept the fact that men aren’t very good communicators. In the article lack of com...
Communications generally occur in body languages: how the individuals interpret each other. Her essay is an event that is reoccurring more and more lately. The event results in a failure in marriage. In today’s society more and more people are splitting up or having divorces due to miscommunications. The essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation,” that Deborah Tannen wrote is much use of today because it explains where miscommunications happen and she has her own studies and research to back it up. The essay goes into depth about her ideologies that cause miscommunications. Look at a miscommunication twice and do not be quick to judge because it will save plenty of
“Sit with your legs closed, act like a lady,” or “Boys don 't play with dolls.” I 'm sure many of us heard this growing up. Women aren’t allowed to be bossy, because only men are supposed to be leaders or because it 's a manly trait. Men aren 't supposed to show their emotions because that is thought to be a weakness and men are supposed to be strong. Men and women have specific qualities that are dictated to their gender by their society. Men and women are not allowed to pick up traits from the other gender, although it is said to be the very thing that makes us human. Men get momentary advantages in this lifestyle, while women suffer most. Although, both sides suffer in the end.
Further evidence of communicative differences exist between men and women in various other social settings as well. Consider, for example, those individuals employed in customer service-related Jobs. While in JC Penny, I noticed that female customer service representatives were more apt to offer immediate friendly assistance than the male reps. Men are not as cocky nor as confident in this sort of situation; their eyes tend to dart around the area of the store while the eyes of a women remain focused upon the eyes of the customer. The men seem to communicate with a lot less smiles. Apparently they have to get past a certain “ice-breaking'; point before they will feel comfortable with a genuine look of happiness.
...ind this to be a typical male trait. Our surveys and research found however, that these types of traits are normally associated with men within the business world. Through our research, we found that in a male dominated society, adapt to the male styles of communication. As we have previously stated, the styles of communication between genders differ greatly. Men tend to use conversation to obtain data whereas women use conversation to create connections. Through our research, we also came up with some solutions for bridging the communication gaps between males and females. To reduce miscommunication, males and females must learn to interpret the messages being sent to them. They must learn to understand the speakers' motives and background. In effective communication, one must realize the experiences of the speaker and listener, and work to create a common understanding of the messages being created. Males should try to understand the female need for connection whereas females need to understand the male need for data. If the two cultures can learn to combine their styles by offering information while creating a connection, the male and female communication gap will be bridged.
In the first chapter Gray explains that it is as if men and women are from different planets. He states, "Without the awareness that we are supposed to be different, men and women are at odds with each other" (Gray 10). By this quote Gray is saying that not knowing these differences men and women will have conflicts and frustrations in their relationships. Furthermore, most men and women do not know the differences between each other, and they end up fighting and breaking up. John Gray does a great job explaining men's and women's differences in the book Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.
According to Eagley, Wood, and Fishbaugh (1981), women are more concerned than men about the quality of interpersonal relationships. Women take greater responsibility for establishing and maintaining interpersonal bonds, whereas men do not. Also, women are more empathetic and more accurate at decoding nonverbal communication than males. Male gender roles also claim that men should remain independent and not agree closely with others, while it is seen as acceptable for women to conform to group behaviors.
For many years society has embraced the idea that the differences between men and women are biologically determined and certain roles, behaviors and attitudes constructed by society assign and control how men and women behave and are perceived. Sex is determined by genetics while our gender is programmed by social customs. Some theories interpret that a women is tender and a loving mother while on the other hand men are aggressive hunters and are the dominant one of the family. Gender roles prescribe norms, which instruct people to pursue specific careers and lifestyles.
As I entered adulthood and encountered the opposite sex on a new level it was quite a learning experience. I realized although the male is physically stronger than the female, the female is emotionally stronger. The male tends not to be too much of a thinker where a woman definitely is a thinker and dwells on many aspects of life. The male is more visually stimulated where the female is more emotionally stimulated. Women need to be heard and reassured and men don’t give that as much as women would like. It seems to me that men don’t need the same emotional support women need, and so the conflict begins! What both sexes need to do is listen and pay attention to one another. Also to realize that what you need is not always what others need.
A lot of attention has been dedicated to the thought that women and men communicate very differently from one another. In this paper I am going to discuss the gender differences in communications between the opposite sexes. Many believe that gender plays a major role in communication but in all reality, that isn’t the case. Several factors play a part in how someone communicates with another person regardless of their sex. The main question is what role does gender play in communication or is it the roles our cultures put on genders’. In my opinion, it is the way we were raised that affects the way we communicate.
...a meaningful communication to take place. In conclusion, there are differences between men and women that go beyond social nurture. These differences have their origin in their genes. The differences evident in men and women are translated in their behavior and communication. There are possibilities of these differences in their turn raising the problem of failing to understand one another because in a communication men and women have a different set of expectations from each other. It is essential to understand and appreciate these differences for a meaningful communication to take place.
I do not pretend to be a complete expert in the vast world of men and women. However, as one of these creatures, I decided early on in life to do my best to figure out the relationship between us and our counterparts. This was very interesting to me because, unlike most people, I do not believe that we simply "evolved" to become what we are today. I believe we were created the way we are by a very big God who knew what He was doing, and did it for a purpose. After a mere 18 years of observation, I have concluded that we as humans are trying to look too deeply into the purpose of "man" and "woman." We make the relationship too complicated. We need to stop prying into why men like football and women like quilts, and simply accept that we do. That is the way it is. And as I shall point out, that is the way it is best.
Men and women will never be the same when it comes to both emotional and physical aspects. So, why is it that people are surprised when men and women have trouble communicating? God gave Eve to Adam for companionship. Their differences are what make them a complete pair.
Biologically there are differing physical features s as well as brain characteristics, however men and women start out from the same tissue and can perform equally in many of the same tasks. Traditionally males have fulfilled a more dominant role in society than females, but roles are becoming more equal as females engage in careers and activity outside of the home. It was also previously thought men should initiate sex and be in a committed relationship to one woman, however woman have become sexual initiators and discovered they also can enjoy sexual activity and experiences. As a whole society is recognizing the differences between males and females, but also allowing equal opportunity for either gender to peruse their sexuality
