Why Marching Band is a Sport?

What do you consider a sport? Go back 30 years ago. Most schools only had your typical sports, like football and basketball. Today, most schools have more options for students. More extra curricular activities today are being considered sports, like bowling and golf. If those activities can be sports, why is marching band not considered a sport? While some people think marching band is not a sport, marching band is a sport, because it has physical exercise, professional bands, competitions and after school practices.

The first reason why marching band is a sport is it involves physical exercise. There is more physical activity in marching band than in bowling or golf, and they are sports. Students are basically …show more content…

Many different bands will practices not only during school hours, but also after school. It is just another similarity between marching band and sports. For example, my high school band has practice every day for 50 minutes and on mondays and thursdays after school for two and a half hours. Which is more than my high school bowling team practice. During these practices people will learn drill, music, and basic marching from the band director. He, or she, is like the coach. The students follow their instructions, just like following a coach. The students will even run, stretch, or do other types of exercise before starting. During these practices students must work hard and want to get better. Students cannot screw around or they could mess up the entire band. That is the same for other sports as …show more content…

They argue that there is not much to marching band. In truth, there is a lot to marching band. A person must be able to play the song on their instrument. Some instruments are even heavy. Then that person must learn the drill. After that they have to put the drill and music together. Some bands even memorize their music. These bands will do this at least three times. They will also practice basic marching. If a person works hard, they could even get a scholarship for college. In most schools a student can get a gym credit for marching band like other sports.
