Hispanic's influence in Florida dates back for more than 500 years when the Spanish arrived and began to establish their permanent settlements. I am proud to say I?m an American of Hispanic descent. As a second generation Cuban-American and a Native of Florida, it is important for me to learn and pass down the unique qualities and richness of my Hispanic roots, culture and traditions.
From birth the Hispanic heritage has had a strong impact on me. Being raised in a bilingual home and learning Spanish in school, has provided me the advantage to communicate in both languages. Hispanic- Americans can socialize and understand both the English and Spanish community in Florida. Hispanics can also share my language with those of non- Hispanic descent. As I approach my college years and life, I think I will benefit from being bilingual.
Like the influence of the Spanish language, Hispanics have made many significant contributions Florida. In business, science, politics and education Hispanics have been a key factor in Florida?s development and its economy. Just like other immigrating Latino groups, Cubans share the same stereotypes when they are categorized as criminals, violent and others as well as having to face barriers for employment, housing and economics. However, most of the discrimination that Cuban Americans face is due to their ties to their home country. For example, most Cubans are stereotyped as extremists who despise Fidel Castro. The main push factor for Cuban immigrants was the regime of Castro in their home country. In contrast, other Latino immigrants are mainly pushed out of their country because of economic reasons. Therefore, while Cuban immigrants are seen as extremists or anti-Castro activists, most other Latino immigrants are merely seen as immigrants who come to “take jobs”. As mentioned, Cubans are not categorized as immigrants who come to the United States in hopes for a better economic life, they are seen as political refugees who are in search of better political conditions. Not being of Hispanic or Latino descent, one can only wonder what it would be like paving the way for others to follow. Meanwhile, migrating to a state like Florida can be very challenging. After all, Florida is diverse and is considered a melting pot state, along with the influx of different origins of nationalities, there are different arrays of celebration of music, dance and food. Many people that come to the United States are comfortable speaking their own language and will refuse to speak the American language which is English. My parents did everything they knew to help my sister and I learn and respect our Mexican culture. Born into American culture but raised by Hispanic parents, often was difficult for me. Since I was little I had to manage and balance two very different cultures at the same time. There were many times while growing up that I encountered complex situations in regards to language, whether to speak Spanish or English and when it was appropriate. I felt a lot of pressure having to act as an interpreter for my parents when we were out in public. At home I was told to speak Spanish so I would not forget, but at school I was taught to only speak English with my teachers and friends. However, when we would go visit family in Mexico, I was expected to only speak in Spanish, since speaking in English in front of family members who only spoke Spanish was seen as disrespectful. Every culture around the world have different characteristics, many may seem very similar, however, one would be naïve to assume that they are. Cuban American and Mexican American cultures, have many features such as language which can lead one to think they share a similar culture, hence they should be treated the same way based on their culture. These two cultures, although, they have similar physical features, and share the same language, they differ in many different aspects, such as religion, political beliefs, educational backgrounds and traditions.
As far as personal experience, living in Miami,-Florida, as a none-Cuban Latin, makes it easier to have an insight in all kinds of prejudice and stereotypes within the same Hispanic society. This behavior makes it hard to not feel negatively judged by others who do belong to the majority group. Unfortunately prejudice is not simply an attitude that remains internal to its owner; it impacts behavior. When negative attitudes on the basis of differences translate into behavior, we have as a result, discrimination and the social inequity it produces. Therefore, efforts to reduce prejudice are well advised to take the social context into consideration when focusing on the individuals' attitudes.
Throughout the experiences I have been through, such as meeting proud Latin kids in school and reading about the experiences of other Latinos, I am proud to say that I am Puerto Rican. I will teach the future generation about our culture, including traditions and customs. My children may not have the opportunity to read about well-known Latinos in school, but I will make sure they learn about prominent scholars, such as Jose Marti and Rigoberta Menchu. Also, speaking Spanish is very important because our culture is based on the language. After all, one day the official language of Puerto Rico might change to English. However, we can't forget our roots, or where we came from. Even though I was born in America, I am Puerto Rican.
I grew up in a Spanish-speaking family. I attended school in the U.S. since pre-k and I also had an older sister and brother who already spoke English. Two factors that I believe helped me in learning and comprehending the English language. I sometimes struggle having to bounce back and forth from each language. Additionally, I have also experienced perks of being bilingual. I actually obtained my first job as a translator. Most people are told that employers are more likely to hire bilingual speakers. However, this is all that is being said about bilingual speakers. I have not been aware of people having conversations of the effects of being a bilingual speaker.
