September 11th 2001, the day that changed America forever. On this day, 3,000 Americans including civilians, police officers, firefighters and paramedics were innocently murdered by al-Qaeda terrorist. Commercial airline planes were used as missiles and flown into the World Trade Center in NY, the Pentagon in the nations capital, and in a open field in Pennsylvania. For America being the most technology advanced nation in the world, along with having the largest, strongest and most advance military, it is hard to understand how these horrific acts of terrorism could have happened on U.S. soil. After the World Trade Center bombings in 1993 and the Oklahoma City bombing at the Murrah building, one would think that we would have learned for those intelligence failures and improved on them. Was the cause of September 11th intelligence failures? Communication failures? Or just failure to piece it all together? I believe that September 11th could have been prevent if certain actions and polices were follow and put into place. Many people believe that there was a lack of information gathered in the agencies and that the information they did have was not shared amongst each other. Along with that people believe that there was no actions taken in the departments to further enhance on counterterrorism. None of these assumptions turned out to be true. In 1993 a truck bomb went off in the garage of the World Trade Center which killed six people. This attack for the first major attack on U.S. soil. The investigation led to the FBI to Omar Abdel Raham and another group that planned to bomb the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the United Nations and other sites (Reno). After the investigation to became clear the there was a connection between thes... ... middle of paper ... ... got traffic indicating that there would be an attack on September 11th (PBS). They did not know the time, place or what type of attack it would be. This information wasn’t even translated and disseminated until September 12th, the day after the attacks. Our government and agencies were to slow to react and were to comfortable. They spent to much time focusing on terrorism over seas yet not realizing that they were here planing attacks and using our resources in our own back yard. September 11th was a major wake up call to everyone, citizens and the government. Agencies such as the CIA and FBI need to drop their egos and understand we all need to work together and that we are all one team. The resources and tools where there for the agencies, they were just to slow and relaxed. Had they not have been, the September 11th terrorist attacks could have been prevented.
What caused the intelligence failure of 9/11 and how can this be corrected in the Future?
Following the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the Unites States found itself in a search for answers and revenge against those that had brought about this atrocity. The attack that has been compared to that of Pearl-Harbor elevated the tracking and collecting of terrorism from barely a priority, to the forefront of the American radar. I honestly believe that terrorism as the #1 priority is destined to remain at the top for the foreseeable future. The elemental thoughts on almost all American minds following the attacks were who had the strength and capability to could carry out such an attack on a country with the world’s strongest military and what led to their focus to attack the Untied States: In short, who attacked us, and why do they hate us? The Untied States formed a bi-partisan 9/11 Commission was formed to trace the roots of Al-Qa’ida, investigate the history of the 19 hijackers, examine missed opportunities of law enforcement officials to avert the disaster, and make recommendations to clean up the faulty incoherent intelligence-gathering operation. The 500+ page 9/11 Commission Report contained thirteen chapters of historical narratives, analysis and recommendations. All ten members of the bi-partisan commission signed off on the report, which has arguably become a national historical document. Just as the 9/11 Commission was created to find answers and recommend necessary follow steps to ensure history doesn’t repeat itself, Lawrence Wright sought answers as to why 3000 American lives were lost in the attacks on September 11th. An experienced traveler to the region, Lawrence Wright endeavored to do his own investigative study into the history, ideology and circumstances behind this large-...
9/11 was one of the United States biggest disasters. Killing nearly 3,000 people including the 19 hijackers that hijacked the planes that crashed in to the two world trade center towers. Many things could have been done differently on the day of September 11, 2001, that could have saved many lives, including the lives of many fire fighters, NYPD officers, and thousands of civilians. The biggest thing that could have been done to stop the attacks is if airport security was much more advanced and more careful with who got on the planes and what they had on them.
The attacks that occurred on 9/11 took place on September 11th, 2001. In this devastating event, four different attacks had taken place. Each of the attacks were carried out by terrorists. The group responsible for the attack was Al-Qaeda, a militant Islamist organization that is known to be global in present day. The group itself has a network consisting of a Sunni Muslim movement that aims to make global Jihad happen. Furthermore, a stateless, multinational army that is ready to move at any given time. This terrorist group focuses on attacking non-Sunni Muslims, those who are not Muslim, and individuals who the group deems to be kafir. Ever since the late 1980s, Al-Qaeda has been wreaking havoc all around the world. The leader of the group once being Osama bin Laden. Three planes were bound for New York City while another plane headed towards Washington, D.C. which was supposed to take out the U.S. Capitol. Two of the airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center. One plane hitting the North Tower and the other hitting the South Tower. The third plane had crashed into the Pentagon taking out the western side of the building. The last and final plane was focused solely on taking out the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. but failed due to passengers of the plane coming hijacking it from the hijackers. The passengers attempted to take out the hijackers but sadly failed, crashing it into a field in Pennsylvania. Throughout the content of this paper, we will be focusing on the role of media when it comes to 9/11; more specifically: how the media's coverage of 9/11 manipulated our feelings towards 9/11, how it affected Islamophobia in America, and the lasting effects of 9/11.
The day of the attacks was a normal day for citizens. Then, in an instant, everything changed. 19 militants from an Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda decided to carry out a plan to attack America (“9/11 Attacks”). Approximately, at 5:45 A.M. the hijackers passed security clearances, and took off in Flight 11 a few hours later (“Interactive 9/11 Timelines...
September 11, 2001 is known as the worst terrorist attack in United States history. On a clear Tuesday morning, there were four planes that were hijacked and flown into multiple buildings by a terrorist group named al Qaeda. This group, led by Osama bin Laden, killed nearly 3,000 people. Out of those 3,000 people more than 400 police and 343 firefighters were killed along with 10,000 people who were treated for severe injuries. Many lives were taken, and to this day, people still suffer from the attack. September 11th is the most influential event of the early twenty-first century because it made an increase in patriotism, it caused a rise in security throughout the nation, and it had a tremendous effect of thousands of lives.
The Purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of the terrorist attacks that were launched against the United States of America on September the 11TH 2001. It will look at the way in which the state has since legitimized its capabilities of force and violence. From looking at the United States response to the attacks, with what is widely known as the “war on terror” it hopes to uncover evidence to suggest that the attacks permitted the United States and consequently, the United Kingdom to undergo a process of legitimization of previously illegitimate acts of violence and force, consequently, causing a breakdown of individuals civil rights and the unlawful killing of many innocent civilians. It is hypothesized that this war on terror may lay evidence to propose that Hannah Arendt’s claim that the act of war ever becoming violent is unlikely within a nuclear postmodern world and furthermore, that violence and the threat of it can no longer be used as a means to reach political goals or achieve power. It could also suggest that the war on terror has consequently led to support Weber’s theory of the “Violence Monopoly of the State” (1919:59), in which Arendt aimed to dismiss the strength of in modern times. Furthermore the apparent long-term financial gain that the United States have been said to make from the sale and export of weaponry arms used in this war on terror, alongside the monopoly of oil supplies could support Marxist theorists’ view that violence of the state is ultimately linked to the economic forces of capitalism.
At 8:19 am – Flight attendants aboard Flight 11 (Boston’s Logan International Airport en route to Los Angeles) alert ground personnel that the plane has been hijacked; American Airlines notifies the FBI. Around 8:24 am – Hijacker Mohammed Atta makes the first of two accidental transmissions from Flight 11 to ground control in an attempt to communicate with the plane’s cabin. Following this, twenty-four minutes later – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) alerts North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)’s Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) about the suspected hijacking of Flight 11. In response, NEADS call upon two fighter planes located at Cape Cod’s Otis Air National Guard Base to locate and tail Flight 11; they are not yet in the air when Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower. Next in this crucial timeline, at 8:46 am – Mohammed Atta and the other hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 11 crash the plane into floors 93-99 of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing everyone on board and hundreds inside the
Station 1 was an article from the New York Times about 9/11, what happened during 9/11 and what was going through the people’s heads during 9/11. Station 2 was a bunch of pictures of people who were covered in dust and debris. Some of the pictures showed firefighters helping people who were on the street when the planes hit the buildings. Station 3 had pictures of Americans stereotyping Muslims for the attack and some of the pictures even showed Muslims celebrating. Station 4 had phone calls from people who were in the World Trade Centers when they were hit. The people were panicked(obviously) and didn’t know what to do. They were so scared, they couldn’t think clearly. Station 5 was a speech president Bush gave the day 9/11 happened. He was
September 11, 2001 marked the most horrific day in history for United States of America. The events of this day changed the lives of those residing in America forever. United States was considered somewhat safe, in regards to terrorists’ attacks. However, this all came to a screeching halt when 19 militants known to be a part of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group hijacked four planes for the purpose of destroying targeted areas in the United States. As a result of the deadly attack on the United States, security measures drastically changed. Although, security measures throughout the United States have been in place, extreme caution came into effect. All departments looked at different measures to improve preventing terrorists’ attacks. Department of Homeland Security, Aviation and US Customs and Immigration were some of the main areas that changed their security measures.
On September 11, 2001 terrorists crashed two American airline airplanes into Twin Towers, killing thousands of people. It was the worst terrorist attack in American history and it showed us that we are not protected by Atlantic and Pacific. It showed us that we could be attacked by anyone at anytime. It showed us that if we will be attacked again that we can only depend on each other and not on other nations to help us. The 9/11 changed people forever, some lost family members or friends, others lost their jobs even so called “American Dream.”
...om the past and its mistakes to work more diligently in order to prevent the September 11th attacks. The bombing of the World Trade Center in New York was unexpected, but gave the government an opportunity to improve security and avoid future attacks. The carnage at the embassies in Kenya and Tanzania again provided the U.S. government a chance to work against the terrorist network responsible, but again, the government failed. Finally, the assault against the U.S.S. Cole in the port city of Aden gave the U.S. one final opportunity to learn and prevent something from happening again, but the next year, the unthinkable happened and the 9/11 attacks occurred, killing thousands. Had the United States had managed to link the attacks and understand the emerging pattern of attacks against U.S. targets, the destruction, chaos, and death of 9/11 might have never happened.
The nation has had many events that have caused the world to stand still, or so to speak, but nothing has rocked our nation more than 9/11. 9/11 changed our nation and still to this day continues to make people cautious. When an event causes as much destruction, pain, and chaos as 9/11. How did the planning stages of this attack get overlooked? It is still a question as to whether or not this big attack could have been prevented.
The Transportation Security Administration, and, The Department of Homeland Security reorganization of preferences among numerous law enforcement agencies at the federal level (DEA and FBI). With these new add-ons and restructuring of federal departments and agencies was also an expansion in federal funding for the purpose of antiterrorism tactics. These attacks were calculated and showed a wanton disregard for human life. (Brown, B., 2007, p. 240). The September 11, 2001 attacks revealed that terrorist threats were possible in America with the consequences being disastrous. (Roberg et al., 2012, p. 511)
America already knew there was a terrorist who hatted America and tried to blow up the twin towers in 1993. We had all this knowledge, and we did nothing within seven years to secure airports. Yet the American government took his threats and blew them off like they were nothing. Also you cannot just blame Osman bin laden for the 9/11 attacks. America is to blame because of their intervention with the Middle East. The Middle East blames America for the separation of the Muslim people. The group al Qaeda just wants to unite all Muslim people and form one perfect nation. So the al Qaeda made it clear of what their intentions would be if America did not step out of the war in the Middle East, which they would use any means of force to make them stop. The American government chose to be ignorant and did not heed the warnings of the al Qaeda, and the cause was the terrorist attack known around the world as 9/11. 9/11 could have been avoided if a lot of things had not occurred and had been changed. Like if America had never joined the war in the Middle East over a resource like oil. That’s the whole reason that America had joined the war was because of the oil that the people in the Middle East
