Portugal like any other country has its crime especially before World War 2. However the question is why was it out of control? To answer this we must peal back all the layers that make Portugal, Portugal. In other countries law enforcement take care of the crime that take place in the country, like the U.S.A. But that is not true when traveling to Portugal, outside of the major cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Braga it’s rare to see police officers if any at all. I recently went back to the mother land and in my town there are no police officers at all. So many people ask how come? Why is there not crime? So now with this paper I too was curious so I recruited the help of my Great Grandmother in trying to answer this question. The first …show more content…

As shown in the Graph bellow as single mother families grow so do the violent crimes because there isn’t both parents showing discipline and teaching there children how to behave. If there was only one parent in a house hold were my Great Grandmother lived the average house hold had 6 or more kids, so one women taking care of 6 or more kids she would have to work day and night to feed them in till they can help out a little, even then it might not help enough. But there would be no time for discipline in that situation because if the kids missed behaved at home the mother wouldn’t be there to discipline them due to work and that father left them. Those kids would have free rains to do what they wanted and hardly get any repercussions because no one is there. All and all I believed before world war 11 that society was constructed in a curtain way that social control help stabilize crime. This is evident in Portugal by the stories and answers by my Great Grandmother. She showed me that crime was controlled by families and how there bond and discipline help put each other in line. How there is no time to do crime when you’re always doing something either work or taking care of house hold chores, also that the town is so connected to one another that they help keep each other in check . Religion helps control crime by the rules and laws that is set, which we see evident with the low divorce rate of that era which led to lower crime due to the fact that there is two people working together to discipline there
