Eating healthy has always been the main priority of many families but with the rise in organic food popularity, it hasn’t been the cheapest option for most. Families suffer from more than just low wages and high expenses in their everyday, many have realized they can’t afford to put healthier food on the table either. The problem doesn’t lie within the adults it often falls on the children who eat the food given to them and couple it with a more sedentary lifestyle than that of the past. The Obama Administration has been trying to help but often times hits roadblocks when attempting to make significant changes in our children’s menus. The problem with that is, every parent wants to be a good mom or dad. It is hard to tell your child who is beyond excited that you are eating chicken and broccoli at home instead of going to McDonald’s so that they can be healthy. In San Francisco the happy meal has actually been banned which I believe is a step in the right direction towards this epidemic. In the article “San Francisco bans Happy Meals” by Sharon Bertstein, she reports “Just after the vote, McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud said, “We are extremely disappointed with todays decision. Its not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for.” (Bernstein par. 6) What’s important to note about this quote is that the businesswoman states that its not what the customer wanted insinuating the company didn’t care whether or not the happy meal was banned. (American Heart Association) only recommends about six teaspoons daily, that’s pretty horrific. How is it that we Americans are so used to consuming more than we need? The article states that now obesity has affected many kids in America. Due to obesity affecting many kids in America the argument here is that, parents are not thinking about their child’s health and how it affects their body. Their main worry if the food is cheap and that it’s reasonable to buy for their family; which is understandable. Thus, many kids health are in danger from the lack of a nutritious diet. At the same time, fast food companies believe that it’s not their fault. This campaign, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, is aimed to solve the challenge of obesity in this generation’s children (“Let’s Move”). This campaign targets, not just the families, but also schools and communities to improve the environment for children to strive and become healthier. Starting with the family, the program discusses the important fact that children will eat better if they are surrounded by healthier food. Having the parents modeling good behavior and eating the healthier food influences the children and they too will eat the healthier food. They also include tips for how to eat healthier such as mixing vegetables into dishes, substituting fat-free milk or water instead of soda or other sweeter beverages, and substituting desserts for fruit, saving the “treats” for special occasions. In addition, eating as a family is seen to help with obesity because it creates structure in eating and decreases the snacking children have throughout the day (“Let’s Move”). In regards to school, by having the children participate in the National School Lunch Program, as well as the School Breakfast Program, the children are able to have a nutritious meal at a reduced cost or even free. Having options, such as a salad bar, and multiple options for children to choose from that are not just healthy but also delicious, will also help children see that eating healthy is not as atrocious as they perceived. We are all familiar with sugar. It is sweet, delicious, and addictive; yet only a few of us know that it is deadly. Organic farming prohibits any use of artificial chemicals, growth hormones, or antibiotics in the production of its crops and livestock. Organic farming has existed for centuries, but after the industrial revolution factory farming was arising. Organic farming does not allow the use of any pesticides in its crops or livestock production, but also helps sustain a good economic flow in rural communities.
