If one were to ask a young child, say four or five, what it is they wish to for a future profession—“what do you want to do when you grow up?” a child more likely than not, has a response at the ready. “I want to be a doctor!” “I want to be a baseball player!” All are common responses to be heard. However, the chances that the young child, in his or her adult life follows through with their career of choice determined at a young age is very low. In fact, what one wishes to do ‘when they grow up,’ very frequently, changes a multitude of times, even throughout adulthood. However, I must say that I am the exception to the common occurrence. Students should be able to communicate their needs and understandings within the classroom in order for myself, as the educator, to make well informed decisions in regards to their learning. Therefore, along with a positive relationship between myself and my students, the classroom environment should be that of one that encourages such communication, in contrasts to hinder it. Furthermore, students should also feel safe in that they can communicate aspects of their lives outside of the classroom as well. As I have seen in my field studies thus far, students’ lives outside of the classroom greatly impact their lives inside of the classroom. For example, one student I remember working with— as known by the teacher and school administration— had a very difficult life outside of the classroom, which caused the student to continuously be angry and have issues in relation to attention, which I was told was a result of continuous paranoia, fear of the events that occurred outside of the classroom occurring within the classroom. As one could imagine, the life the student was living at home impact his education drastically. When prompted to discuss the events that were occurring outside of the classroom, in hopes of improving his academics, the student refused to talk, as the student’s relationship with the teacher attempting to communicate with the student was that of one with many struggles. Therefore, this is one such example in regards to how students’ lives outside of the classroom effect what occurs throughout the school day, and how a positive teacher-student relationship, with a line of open communication would benefit the students’ learning
When we were little, we thought the word “Career” was not a big deal, but as a senior in high school, the word has become our reality as we start to finish our last semester. The question we’ve been asked all these years is, what do you want to be when you grow up? But our answer is simple: we don’t want to grow up. As an innocent kid it seemed like the time would never come, but it has. It’s time to get serious and really ponder this question.
As young child we are all asked what we would like to be when we grow up. Usually the answer is a firefighter, a policeman, or nurse. When I was a child I changed my mind multiple times. At first I wanted to be Minnie Mouse, then a dancer. Then, about two years ago, I wanted to be a crime scene investigator. I had all my plans worked out. I was going to attend the University of Memphis and major in criminal justice. However, one day about a year ago, my mind totally changed. I decided to go in the complete opposite direction. I decided that I wanted to be a cosmetologist.
Communication is the transmission or exchange of information. To effectively communicate a person must transmit a message using verbal & nonverbal methods to a recipient who interprets the meaning and returns with a response. It is a two-way process. Being able to talk and listen this does not guarantee the desired goals will be met, if the participants are unable to their ideas, problems, or needs during the communication process. Attempts to communicate is not always effective and when it fails we must look at the principle component as to why the exchange was misunderstood. These failures can be related to internal, external, and semantic barriers, also known as noise.

Growing up I struggled with the constant question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” With so many different career paths to choose from, it’s hard to become overwhelmed. As college gradually tiptoed in on me, I began to feel like I would never find the profession right for me. The few things that I did know I wanted in my future career were very simple to me. They were a job in the healthcare world where I could go home each night knowing I made a difference in someone’s life. A job that wasn’t just following a routine everyday but required creativity and brought new challenges while working with a diverse population.

In the first article “The Journal of Educational Psychology” states that teacher-student interactions are very important and can change a students path in achievement. They suggest that when teacher-student interactions take place in a positive matter whether one on one, small groups, or the whole class, that these teacher-student interactions deliver the students with the correct support needed for their learning potential. Also, these positive interactions then can help set the student up for other positive paths in the classroom. Examples of these interactions are categorized into three realms of support: emotional, organizational, and instructional. Throughout the progression of early childhood stages up to young adulthood, you hear the question that is constantly getting asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” After hearing this question year after year, it really got me thinking about my future and life goals. The ability to learn and become educated to help people for the rest of your life says a lot about the type of person who puts others before themselves. This has inspired me to become that type of person and become a master at my future profession. After highschool, I want to go to college and study health and athletic training.
It can be hard to know what one wants to do when they’re older. There are certain things to consider, like a level of interest in the topic, how much information one would already know, how much that will be needed to know, and to take in if this is what one would want to do in their future life. I know for me when I have to think about future plans it can really worry me. I tend to get stressed out, scared, and wanting to avoid the topic entirely, even though in the back of my mind I know I need to stop running away with what I need to currently take care of. I am often asked “What do you want to be when you’re older?” or “A Political Science degree? What do you suppose you will do with that?” And honestly, I cannot say for certain. But that’s ok, because these questions are not necessarily intended to be answered with absolute certainty. After all, no one really expects a 17 or 18 year old high school senior, whose only experiences are likely limited to what a K-12 education, a few extracurricular activities, and perhaps a part-time job can offer, to make an uninformed prediction about what he or she wants to do every day for the rest of his or her life. The way I see it, I still have eight semesters worth of college classes, perhaps a few internships or international experiences, hundreds of people to meet, and four more years of life to experience before I make my career decision. In that time, I may discover that my passions and interests are different than they are now, especially considering they have changed before.

Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
Most children seem to have ideas of what they would like to be when they grow up. The average person walking into any kindergarten class today would find future teachers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, astronauts, firefighters, and ballerinas; the list is endless. I never had the chance to even dream about what I wanted to be when I grew up and was given little chance to develop my own tastes and ideas towards this goal. I spent my childhood trying to be the good example to my younger brother and sister that my father demanded in his letters. All the while I was hoping and praying that my mother and father would get back together. The only thing I knew was being a mom and that is what I thought I wanted to be.
