I am not sure that I agree with all of the results. However, I believe they may be accurate. First, I will explain my technical skills. I scored a 24, which is on the bottom end of the high range. I am not surprised by this score. I agree that I have learned technical skills from school and at work. I have financial knowledge, sale experience, and a high level certification as a graphic applier that is based on my abilities (Professional Decal Applicators Association). However, the reason I agree with the this score is because I know that I can continue to improve on my technical skills. However, the more that I learn about leadership, the more my definition has evolved. Between the knowledge of leadership traits and leadership skills, my definition has expanded on the attitude or culture that I originally mentioned. I do not see myself as a strong leader. However, I know that I have some leadership skills. It will be important for me to continue to think about how I can continue to develop my technical, human, and conceptual skills, so that I can be the best leader I can be. However, Northouse (2015) continued to explain a few other skills that are important for leaders to possess. Some of those skills are motivation, social judgement, problem-solving skills. These are also importatnt skills that a leader must demonstrate. I need to work on all of these skills to be a better leader and will work to remind myself of all the different types of leadership skills, so that I can continue to improve as a leader.
4. What skills, if any, do I need to acquire to be a better leader?
All-in-all after reading about leadership skills, I think that I have a lot to work on. I already demonstrate some leadership skills (such as human and problem-solving skills). However, I know that I could be a better motivator and improve on my conceptual skills. Also, I think that all of my leadership skills can be improved on. Being a leader you need to be in tune with your talents, strength’s, and weaknesses. Personally I feel I have many skills and talents. I am a great friend, I’m trustworthy and dependable. Personality traits and characteristics have a profound effect on our ability to lead others. By recognizing our own strengths and weaknesses we become stronger, more effective leaders. Over time, researchers have discovered that there is a long list of specific traits that contribute to the leadership process and effective of the leaders, but six that are considered to be key traits: intelligence, confidence, charisma, determination, sociability, and integrity.
James Kouzas and Barry Posner state, “Leadership is important, not just in your career and within your organization, but in every sector, in every community, and in every country” (2012, pp. 7). This quote is a good example of the significance that leadership can have not only on one’s personal life, but in their professional life in terms of how and with who they interact with. When it comes to my own leadership skills, there are three specific areas that I could personally improve on: communication, looking at the future, and relationship building. These are three areas that are important when it comes to understanding my own leadership style and how they relate to two of Kouzas and Posner’s leadership components: Model the Way and Inspire a Shared Vision (2012).
According to Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment, the interpretation of scores for perception of what makes a good leader gave me the following results: good perception of a good leader and the scores for perception of your own ability to lead resulted in low perceived leadership ability for myself (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). Define the word leadership can be a perplexing endeavor, due to the varying context that the term leadership can be associated with. This is especially difficult when trying to put it in your own words. To me, leadership, or one who is placed in a leadership role, is one who leads by example, and does not refrain from making and owning decisions regardless of results or consequence. Further, leadership traits are inherent, and cannot be learned; either you have them or you don’t.
Skills are a basic requirement, but traits are essential in leadership. Traits are unique in defining an individual’s character. A combination of strong skills and traits that include emotional intelligence and knowledge of leadership behaviors become critical factors for a leader to lead effectively. It is important for a leader to possess “effective managerial skills at some level” (Kreitner 465). On the other hand, a leader will be equipped to turn a “…vision into actionable items and successful implementation” (465) by possessing traits that are needed to achieve results.

I can recall a situation in which I could have stepped up and lead an activity through my volunteer practicum at the SCRI society The Club, however I was not confident enough in my own abilities. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
