I believe that confidence and attitude play a major part in someone’s academic success, my favorite subject in school has always been English; because for as long as I can remember I have always been great at the subject. I would say that I had my most significant experiences with literacy at the age of ten, in the fifth grade. My teacher that year was really good with her teaching skills, and we wrote a lot of essays in that class. That is where I learned about essay formatting, how to write an introduction, and how to write numerous styles of essays. Armed with positive experiences from my earlier years, I was secure in my writing skills and I welcomed any new information that I could learn that would make me an even better writer. I owe a lot of my writing abilities to this teacher, I feel that she greatly and thoroughly prepared us for our literary futures. Essay writing was the biggest English lesson of that school year, this is where I first learned how to write an introduction, how to organize and structure paragraphs, and how to construct an overall essay. In this class my teacher would often times use my essays as an example for the other students, because often time I had the highest scored essay in the class. That school year gave me such confidence in myself when it came to writing essays, that it is something I started doing as a hobby and not just in school and academically. For me expressing myself through essay format gave me as much happiness as expressing myself through poetry; My fifth grade teacher always made sure she stressed to the class how much writing we would have to do in the many years to come, and how important it was to make sure that we were well prepared in the art of writing an essay. The process of preparing for college is an arduous process. College is an instrument used to have a successful life. However, getting into college is difficult. The competition for college admittance is extremely high. Most students do not take the necessary actions to ensure their admittance. Consequently, many students do not get attend their ideal college. Therefore, I have taken steps to make certain that I attend the college of my choice, By taking care of my class ranking, actively participating in school functions, and researching my intended degree, I have set myself up to attend the college of my choice.
As I reflect it becomes clear to me that I enjoyed writing my junior year in high school. My English teacher Mr. Duckworth was a one of a kind teacher. His classroom was a normal classroom setting with the desk all line up behind one another. All of his students would face the white erase board that was located in the front of the room. He would typically sit at his desk leaning back in his chair giving us instructions on what was to be done in the class. As we sit in the class, all I can hear are my classmates laughing and joking around as he spoke. he would already have an essay topic on the board that was to the right of us that he could easily see from his desk. This was an everyday routine for all of his classes. As we begin to write, I noticed how different classmates of mine would get up to ask for help with their essay. The students who never asked for help usually would end up with a lot of red markings on their essays.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
When it came to the process of writing my first, second, and third essay’s, there was clear visual improvement that I have become a better writer in certain aspects. Degree Works is a program that allows me to track the progress throughout my schooling at Athens Technical College. Degree Works also shows the major I currently enrolled in and shows all the class that precedes after along with the credit hours, degree applied in associate of applied science, general education, and the classes that I am in now. I can also get a better overview of what I am heading towards in the near future with the degree progress percentage bar. Here at, Athens Technical College there are a lot of resources that are available that are designed to help me succeed and to stay on track. When opportunities for success comes my way I do not turn them down for anything!
Reaching any success will not be easy to achieve. Academic success, in that matter, to me, is meeting or exceeding the University's expectations, learning to the best ability, standing out, and building knowledge towards ones own vocational calling and degree. Personal strengths reflect and devote those aspirations; contributing to finding and accomplishing life goals and academic success. After finalizing the Gallup “StrengthsFinder” valuation, my top five strengths were determined to be competition, adaptability, harmony, ideation, and futuristic, in that order. As an Internation Business Major, yet to find my vocational calling; my goal is to habit those strengths, set academic ambitions, be extrusive, and have a willingness to learn new things of my desired profession while seeking for my calling in life.
Most students learn effectively through both positive feedback and a boost in academic confidence, or through negative feedback and the chance to fix and improve your literacy mistakes. In my experiences, I have grown into the writer I am today due to both positive and negative feedback through the education system. Positive ways have made my writing skills feel validated in their worth, as well as created a desire to continue in striving for the best. It is a very well-known fact that there is a fine line between education and success. Success is a word that is very loosely defined, but is normally associated with education in a very simplistic way. In most cases, people put success and education in the same sentence with the traditional association of attending a college or university, graduating with a degree and moving forward with a career choice. But what happens when education and success are associated in a different, much more complex way? What happens when there is a negative association between education and success?
Another semester has come and gone and I am a few steps closer to the goal I set for myself back in the spring of 2012. A degree! In a few scant months I will be at the halfway point earning my Associate of Arts degree and a couple years from now, hopefully, I will be stepping onto the stage up in Flagstaff and accepting my Bachelor’s degree.
During my first year at Nazareth College, I feel that I have made an incredibly seamless transition to college life and I believe that this has everything to do with my Academic and College Success Class. Through such assignments such as the Identity and Goal Setting Assignment, the Myers-Briggs test, creating SMART goals, and defining our own success definitions have really helped me to grow into who I am, not only as an individual, but as a college student as well. I feel very comfortable with who I am at this point in my life, even though I am not entirely sure still who that is yet and I am incredibly excited to grow as a college student, daughter, sister, and friend.
Everyone wants to be successful, and we all have different visions of success. For me success is to have a goal, plan the steps to achieve the goal, follow the plan, and finally achieve the goal. I will be successful when get my degree and find a job in a psychology field. To be able to achieve my goal I have to have a plan and strategies and I have to follow them. There are different strategies that people can follow to achieve their goals depends on the goals they have. There are some strategies that I think I need to follow to be able to achieve my goal.
Throughout my whole educational career I have always struggled in writing. In 2nd grade I had to stay at after school for writing tutorials to improve on spelling, in 4th grade I never went to recess because I was unable to finish my writing prompts in during the dedicated timeline, and throughout high school I would have panic attacks when trying to write essay. Finally, during my junior year of high school I discovered I have dyslexia. Since then I’ve found different strategies when it comes to writing my essays to reduce the anxiety it gives me. During the course of this semester in your class I discovered what my main strengths and weaknesses are in all my essays. The strengths I have in all my essays are my theses and main points,
