My mentor, Kelly, didn’t get to go to college. At the time though, it was not a popular idea for women to go to college and degrees were not necessary to be considered for a job. So Kelly began working in the bank. She was a hard worker who went in every day, socialized with her clients and got the job done. She switched from bank to bank when they needed her to, and she enjoyed her job most of the time. “However, there is one major negative to working in a bank: there are many criminals. Kelly followed the rules, kept to herself and did her job, but it took her a year to get a promotion, while it only took Maria a matter of months. Although Kelly felt cheated by Maria, Maria did not influence Kelly to cheat. Instead, Kelly chose not to step on anyone’s toes, and just worked as much as she could to get her job done the best way that she could. However, it is only when you ignore the ending to a situation that the good guy finishes last. There are three types of thinking involved in this situation: end-based, care-based, and rule-based thinking. Although Kelly turned her back to rule-based thinking when she chose her friendship to Maria over the law, the stakeholders did not. Maria’s indictment took a long time, as the bank’s stakeholders--managers and the hierarchy above--were unaware of the situation. They forced angry and fearful employees who did not break any rules to wait impatiently, but in the end, made them happy that the law prevailed. Maria finally got the karma she deserved. Thinking about the situation in terms of care-based thinking, Kelly lost. Kelly chose loyalty over the truth. Maria was her good friend outside of work, and she couldn’t believe that Maria would do such a thing. But she convinced herself that it was only a few mistakes, and Maria would eventually stop. At the time, my mentor was unaware if Maria would get caught, and if her career would ever progress. Maria lost her job and went to jail while Kelly progressed. The company’s stakeholders gained more respect and trust for my mentor, and her promotion meant a lot more to her. Her loyalty made the stakeholders more cautious about their future endeavors. They eventually entrusted the right people with more responsibility and implemented a different hiring strategy. This goes to show that with guts and determination, those who are desperate enough to bring about a change, are the ones who are able to utilize what they have to get what they desire. Poverty, addiction and abuse are major obstacles that individuals from rough background face on their way to success. Moreover, it is their education and their ability to utilize their talents, as well as having the audacity to chase their ambitions incessantly, that helps them utilize and exploit the opportunities that open up for them.
Family, education and a person’s opportunities are significant elements that collectively define an individual, as demonstrated by both Wes Moore’s. Depending on the opportunities offered to you and whether you decide to take advantage of them through hard work and persistence will result in your success or failure in the end. Wes Moore explains “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his” goes to show that certain factors affect how you will be as an adult regardless of similar or differentiating backgrounds. (Moore xi).
Lee Siegel's “Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans” challenges the current state of the American system of higher education by targeting and discussing its economic impact. He begins by recounting his own story of how he was forced to take out a loan for his education at the age of seventeen. It was a temporary experience of upward social mobility. I was assumed the socioeconomic status as a member of the elite by the upperclass. Even though I was in a public school system in Greenfield with not nearly the amount of life chances (opportunities in resources, such as education) as the majority of my colleagues (pg.195). It wasn’t until I expressed my intimidation and background was I placed back onto my lowermiddle class platform. Yet by making good impressions, I was able to receive the promise of upward social mobility and resources. I received a grant for my research, worked in labs at Park Tudor and IUPUI, and have obtained enough scholarships to receive my education free at Ivy Tech. That way, I can be in the position these professionals briefly placed me in .The world is a giant audition, if you look the part, then you will get the role.

Barbara White, author of Women’s Career Development, gives an opportunity for successful women to give advice to other women wanting to pursue a career in the workforce. First, they explained that women need to be single-minded today. They must make their own choices and know what they want. If a woman hopes to achieve her goal of an ‘American Dream’ and live up to it, then she should be persistent and keep working at achieving her objectives. The best advice given in White’s book is that a woman should not underestimate herself (227-229). A woman today can be whatever she pleases. It takes work, dedication and persistence to achieve goals in general, not just in the career aspect of life. As seen through Joan Crawford and Dawn Steel’s stories, a ‘business woman’ has a bright future now and for years to come. Women’s roles have drastically changed throughout the past century along with the actual number of women now working. It is phenomenal to see such an increase in women’s participation, and hopefully this course will continue even higher into the twenty-first century.
Although many of her actions were parallel with fellow manager in General Accounting Troy Nordmand’s, he did not receive a prison sentence due to the fact that he attempted to leave the company (although Vinson did initially plan to resign). Conversely, Vinson was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home detention. One particularly interesting aspect of Betty Vinson’s case is the inclusion of her concerns over taking home pay and having health insurance, in addition to the fact that she had a positive reputation and was known for doing “anything you told her”. While it is normal to have concerns over job security, the emotional appeals in her situation add a different side to the story. One could argue that she is a victim -- she could have been targeted due to her reputation, or that fear drove her to do things she otherwise would not have considered. The issue here, however, is that she facilitated the fulfillment of Sullivan’s requests and pleaded guilty to one count of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. As far as the case specifies, despite any superior’s knowledge of Vinson’s tendencies, she was not absolutely forced to do or not do anything. In the business world, this could hinder you from helping your company, as an employee or leader who intends to only help themselves can very easily bring down their company and those who make it up with their selfish behavior. One must become aware of their self-centered and deceptive behavior to fully “get outside of the box” they are living in. To do this, one must first look at the how to help the others around them before themselves, and ultimately to focus on what is going on outside of themselves, or to use a cliché, walk in the shoes of others before we judge them and to better support them in their shortcomings. The hope would then be that others will support you when you are in need.
Once enrolled in a local nursing program at Ohlone Community College, Mary started to work towards her goals of becoming a nurse but reaching them did come with hardships. Mary never let anything get to her because her family never gave up their motivation. " I wanted a better life for my family and I wanted to be somebody". In Caroline Bird’s “College is A Waste of Time and Money”, it’s argued that there are many college students who would be better off if they were to begin working after high school graduation. Colleges and universities can no longer ensure that one will go on to get a better job, getting paid more than they would have without a higher education. However, high school seniors still stress about where they will be attending college, how they’re going to pay for it and what they’re going to study for the next four years. Bird points out how college has changed over the past few decades and how, in turn, it has set many young adults up for disappointment, if nothing else.

For example, Sally was a loyal, responsible, and fair worker during the last 20 years, so any extreme form of punishment could damage both Sally and the company. On the other hand, an inappropriate response from the management could encourage her deviant behavior towards the company in the future. With several conflicting factors apparent in this case, working out an appropriate solution is difficulty. The virtue ethics position allows several interpretations because it focuses on the character as the main motive that defines ethical behavior. Unlike deontology that relates moral actions to rules or pragmatism that considers social context related to ethical behavior, virtue ethics approaches the issue based on individual factors.
