The reason I choose to become a Pediatric Dentist is due to my life experiences. Having healthy and strong teeth is essential when you are growing as a child. I grew up with limitations of health comprehension since my parents weren’t fluent in English. Since my parents worked long-hour shifts, my siblings and I didn’t care much about dental health. As a result, our dental structure was not good. Being a Pediatric Dentist allows you to recommend food choices or care to the patient and parent. My goal is helping the Latino community so every child gets to have a fair dental health. My dentist as a child serves as a model by which I aspire to be. She was an optimistic dentist that always made my siblings and I smile and feel well. Once I become a Pediatric Dentist, I plan to carry her personality onto my patients. With this in mind, they are able to give procedures for preventable diseases and strong dental health. As stated from Doctorly , some of the tasks a pediatric dentist is able to conduct are, “X-Ray scan, evaluation and diagnosis, routine dental check-cups, examination of jaw bones, gum tissues, and other systems related to the oral activity, and pre-evaluation of orthopedic treatment.” Pediatric Dentists are able to give advanced evaluation procedures since they are very knowledgeable in this area. Examples include the management and treatments for tooth or facial trauma injuries. Burns or incision accidents are some of the situations that fall under this category. As for patients of special needs, Pediatric Dentists are also certified to complete oral procedures for them. Dentists have been around as long as man can remember. Early dentist were often the doctors or the barbers in the community. Early dentistry consisted mostly of pulling teeth. Anyone with a pair of pliers could do the job. Dentistry has evolved over the years and involves much more than just pulling teeth today. General Dentistry today involves many things including: oral hygiene, filling caries (cavities), root canals, crowns, and making dentures. Some dentists specialize in areas such as orthodontics or oral surgery.
Some people tend to believe that a dentist is all about pulling teeth, filling gaps, and drilling holes in a mouth. That may be true, but this is more about the person that treats a patient prior to a dentist drilling into a mouth. Dental Hygienists provide more than just the basic examination. They also give advice on how to properly brush and floss, the types of foods to avoid, and give examples of what teeth could look like if not taken care of correctly. A dental hygienist provides preventive, therapeutic, restorative and educational interventions to promote optimal oral health.
As a pediatric hospitalist, there are a wide range of duties that must be completed for the safety and well-being of one’s patients. A duty amongst all physicians is caring for a patient’s illnesses. As a pediatrician, one must be involved in the physical, mental, and emotional upbringing of adolescents throughout every stage of development in good health as well as in illness. A pediatrician takes care of a child from a few weeks after birth to the age of twenty-one when the patient transfers to a new physician. The duties designated to all pediatricians is to reduce infant and child mortality rates, control diseases, make sure patients lead well-maintained lifestyles, and make easier the lives of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Becoming a pediatrician would improve the lives of many children.
Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved going to the dentist. I was never scared, not even when I went for my fillings and wisdom teeth extractions. Mostly all the hygienist I have had so far have been friendly, patient and always ready to help with a big smile on their face and that is what attracted me towards this career. I want to help people in need that cannot afford the services.

In order for that to happen I must have an associate’s degree, bachelor’s, volunteer dental hours, and must have a dental license. From the beginning, when I decided to pursue dentistry, my goal was to become a general dentist, the idea of specializing seemed unnecessary. However, I have a recent newfound interest in pediatric dentistry and may explore that specialty. I’ve enjoyed working with children throughout the various volunteer activities and I feel like there is a need for pediatric dentists in the underserved communities. By being a pediatric dentist as a part of the National Health Corps Scholarship Program, I would be able to provide valuable skills and resources to children and their parents, especially those with special needs and dental fears. While pediatric dentistry is a specialty I will continue to explore, the priority remains to commit my career to serving those in need.
I can remember being a little boy sitting at the piano in church, listening to the preacher talk of how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, which symbolizes the idea that we are here to serve. That message profoundly resonated with me throughout life. It was not until I began accompanying my grandmother to her multiple dental visits that I was able to see how I could put this calling of service into action. I saw firsthand the significant positive impact my grandmother’s dentist was able to make in her life, which encouraged me to want to learn about the field of dentistry. I then started researching dental health and learning of the importance of oral healthcare and how it affects the entire body. I then began to learn of how patient access to proper dental care was limited because of several factors such as, financial barriers, transportation, and dental fear, especially in the underserved minority communities. Given the shortage of black dentists, I realized I could make a positive difference by being an inspiration to those in the community, as well as serve in a professional career that would provide needed healthcare to the community. Pediatrics can be a tiresome and stressful job, but the feeling one gets after seeing a smile on a child’s face makes all the difference in the world. To know that one has made an impact on a child makes a twenty-four hour shift at a hospital or studying for a board test worth it. Just like the rest of the world, pediatricians strive to make an impression. Their legacy is the hope inspired in every sick or suffering child’s heart. At the end of the day, changing a child’s life for the better is the greatest reward any pediatrician can receive.
I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
My desire to go to dental school began to develop in my mid-teens while working at Plainview Oral and Maxillofacial Associates(Plainview Oral). Not only was I fortunate enough to obtain a position there as a young teenager, but since starting over six years ago, I have been mentored by Dr. Bass, a recognized oral surgeon. Under his guidance, I developed a strong appreciation for the skills required to be a successful dentist, as well as the caring and patience needed to gain a patient’s trust.

Dentistry is a career that works with your mouth. Dentists are trained to diagnose, prevent, and treat various problems associated with teeth and mouth tissue. It is a dentist job to be fully aware of different types of dental problems and be able to recognize those problems through looking art x-rays, as well as different pictures of the mouth. The primary focus of dental care is to teach prevention to its patients of how to prevent gums disease, tooth loss, etc. Dentists examine patient’s teeth and mouth tissue in order to diagnose and treat problems. Most of them are orthodontists. A dentist also known as a dental surgeon is a healthcare profession that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and conditions in the mouth.
Some people may wonder, why dentistry? Dentistry is often viewed as maybe boring, or an odd profession to aspire to go into. As I have grown up I have always known that I at least would like to go into the health field, and help people In any way that I can, however
I chose to become a dentist as being a child I had to visit a dentist many times for correction of malaligned teeth that i had. So my dentist who was also a specialist in the field of orthodontics inspired me deeply as it gave me a vague idea of how can i also bring smile and self confidence back to an individual by providing him with a competent smile again by incorporating the blend of my hand creativity and mental alertness, same as my dentist did for me thus returning me my self esteem and the confidence to smile again .Thus i found this field very satisfying and fulfilling.
Moreover in this career I am going to have the opportunity to do one of the things that I really love doing, which is helping others. This career will not only let me teach good habits for good health. But will also let me educate patients, as well as the general public, on how to achieve oral health and to prevent diseases. In fact in the dentistry career I will be able to perform an important service for everyone to help them to maintain their teeth appearance good.
