There are many reasons why I would love to become a social worker. However, it is sort of difficult to pinch point how or why I became attracted to this specific profession. Nevertheless, most of the particles in my body argue that it would have to stem back to experiences I have encountered growing up. I would like to begin by saying that graduating high school I was unsure where I was going or where I would end up. My mother who always had high expectations for me persuaded me to at least attempt pursing a college education. I then decided to enroll Guttman Community College @ CUNY, where I was appointed a Student Success Advocate (S.S.A). My S.S.A saw something in me that I had yet to figure out. I remember being about 11 years old when my brother first attempted to commit suicide. The reason I mention this horrific part of my life was because I remember not understanding why he hated life so much that he wanted to end it, still now it’s a blur but what I do remember was my mom looking to his social worker for support and guidance. The worker refereed us to resources within our community that I am certain my mom was unaware existed. These resources were not only clinical but also social for example we were enrolled in boxing classes and summer camp programs free of cost. These resources really helped him and my family in general overcome such hardships. I think many people haven’t had the skill sets to find these resources that can really help cause change. Being a social worker will allow me the opportunity use the skills I have acquired over the past couple of years in the helping profession to help people become aware of resources in their
