Over 14 million people live within the nearby Bangkok urban Region, making Bangkok a great primate metropolis, dwarfing Thailand's other town centres in terms of significance.

The city is now a chief regional strength in business and finance. It is a global hub for transport and health care, and is appearing as a local centre for the fashion, arts, and amusement.
