Across the United States, 23% of students that attend private and public schools are required to wear uniforms (2014, p.1). All students must wear: pants (khaki, navy blue, or black), shirts with collars, or skirts, shorts, capris with a collared shirt. In the winter, students can wear jackets, cardigans and footwear. As for footwear, students are allowed to wear any closed toed shoe (Dallas Independent School District, 2010, p.1). When students wear uniforms, it makes them look more professional and appropriate for the school setting. Unfortunately, principals and teachers hear many complaints from parents and students about wearing uniforms, but wearing uniforms offers many benefits that affects the school’s staff, parents, and students throughout the academic year.
The students who wear uniforms are more focused on their studies, but do understand that their appearance is just important. Since students have to follow the uniform policy, there is less worry about what to wear in the mornings. Students save a lot of time by wearing uniforms. In the morning, students know exactly what they are wearing and therefore do not have to spend countless minutes staring at their closets wondering what to wear for the school day. Going even further into the situation, students who wear uniforms could sleep longer because they have their outfit already picked out for the day. According to Danielle Spanner (2014), educational writer, students that come to school dressed in a uniform understand that their appearance is crucial to their classmates’ first impressions. Students want to look professional inside the school environment, but students also want other classmates to accept them.
Also, the students who wear uniforms show respect fo...

In the morning before school, picking out an outfit can be difficult. There are many questions to consider like; “Do I want to be different?”, “What will people think of this outfit?”, “Does this show who I am?” This can be very stressful, and cause complications when it comes to identifying yourself and making difficult decisions. One of the most controversial topics revolving around schooling is the weather students should or should not wear uniforms to improve academic and social behavior. Many sources say that school uniforms improve discipline, attendance, lower criminal activity, and increase academic achievement in students; Furthermore, this is due to less distraction and conforming to the idea that uniforms makes you smarter. This false ideology that is expected from school uniforms has not been proven in any way to work and is more of a waste of the tax-payers money than an improvement. There are more outlying factors that contribute to success or failure than just uniforms and pro-advocates do not get this big picture. The most outspoken reasons why to use
School is considered the building block to the beginning of life and the focus of learning. It supports in the progress and development of an self-governing character. Uniforms have created a lot of debate over the past few years. Many students feel as though they lose their ability to express themselves when they are forced to wear a schools required uniform. While others feel as though the school uniforms make the student body equal. Many gaze to uniforms or a dress code as a way for stimulating a feeling of self-control in the classes, as well as the atmosphere of learning,
As unnecessary, to most students, as it may seem, school uniforms can actually carry a lot of potent. According to a bulletin produced by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, it stated that “When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork.” Students do not have to emphasize on what to wear to school each day; they tend to focus more on their education rather than to learn who is wearing the latest fashion trend. Students may start to digress to a point where they are even clueless about what they had learned during their entire school year. It is saddening to realize that these students would prioritize their clothing over their education instead. Providing uniforms to the students would have a tremendous effect over these students and the school systems. Students would not have to spend great amounts of money on clothing in order to receive the praise or attention of their friends and/or family; vice-versa, students who don’t have the money to afford the latest clothing will not have to suffer the gossips of their poor taste of
School uniforms reduce the stress children feel when trying to fit in with their peers. Without them, some children may be alienated because their economic background reflects the clothes they wear. Children tend to break off into “cliques” and uniforms could possibly help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
Students are distracted by the variety of clothing they choose to wear it takes away from them gaining inner knowledge. Students choose to wear fancy, strange, or bright colorful clothes. Students become more interested in paying attention to what other students are wearing and what they have instead of focusing on the subject they are being taught in class. Students should be focusing on gaining new knowledge and skills. Wearing uniforms would teach students how to focus on their personalities, inner beauty, rather than their

School uniforms are just as comfortable as student’s that dress in the baggy and tight fitted clothing. Students can wear nice relaxed pants, and a polo shirt is a basic comfortable outfit for these uniforms. Also, school uniforms show a strong sense of discipline from student’s that attend those schools. School uniforms are often portrayed as looking professional. For instance, when students graduate High School, most of them will work in a job that has uniforms; therefore, they cannot complain of their uniforms are uncomfortable and
Worrying more about others, rather than themselves, students pay more attention to the appearance of their peers instead of their academics. To begin, if school uniforms became apart of the school policy, students’ academics would improve phenomenally. Hanley noted that “The reason for the policy [was] to further improve ascending test scores and provide a safe, comfortable learning environment” (A1+). Clearly, school administrators wanted to improve test scores, and they figured if students dressed the same, then they would have no other choice but to focus on their school work. If the students can concentrate on their school work, then they will have high self- esteem. Furthermore, Valdez believes that school uniforms, positively, will change student academics: “… [they] decrease self consciousness and increase self esteem...” (14). Reasonable and realistic, students who feel better about themselves will succeed in school rather than those who have poor self-esteem. Not only do school uniforms encourage students to have a better attitude about themselves, but they also change the environment in which students learn....
