Beginning in kindergarten, young children around the age of five would disrespect their parents and teachers because they would not know better. Later, beginning in the adolescent years, young adults would just push aside all authority in general to show that they do not wish. Eventually, by the time men and women would become full adults, they would begin to violate laws and regulations set by others, even the omnipotent government. Why do people rebel against authority?
Girls and boys, men and women, rebel against others because they believe that what others ask of them are wrong. People believe that not everything being requested is the right way to go. What's being asked could either be illegal or not approved by today's society. Men and women usually will go against anyone who tries to make them do things that are illegal. The myth states that Landrat knew, best, but Fredrick concluded the truth was opposite (Macdonogh 10). Anders states that, “if tea was brought in, men were not allowed to unload it off the ship”(2). Even since the 1700s, men and women ignored the government and capitols laws. If people believed that what the government is requesting, they would just ignore them and keep doing what they please. Even if they government specifically said they are not allowed to do such a thing.
Some people, usually foolhardy teens, believe that ignoring others could be considered popular and that everyone should do it. "Officers threaten to resign, and men refuse to fight" (Whittenburg 3). Teen boys and girls usually pertain in their own cliques. Being in these specific groups, they inherit habits from the others in the posse. People believe that if they bate others, it could bring them popularity and they could be noticed...

Sometimes parents may acquire a divorce and the parents begin dating someone new and their children will not listen or do anything for their boyfriend or girlfriend because they may not approve or they are still hurting. Rebellion happens all over the world, at any time, over a little thing, maybe even bigger reasons. Not just bad people rebel. Saints sometimes rebel because they do not like what is being taught or what is being said. Everyone has a say in what they believe and not all rules should be made by the same group of people all the time. Men and women all around the globe can be found breaking laws every day. They make even break a few rules in their everyday life, but that is because they believe in their own mind that it is the right thing to do.
Not all rules are always agreed on by every individual. Oftentimes people tend to keep to themselves about their differentiating views, but others fight for what they believe in. In order to make any type of progress for a specific cause, effort and determination needs to be put into a person’s every attempt towards a positive development. Individuals who rebel against an authoritarian society are often faced with the challenges to fight for what they believe in in order to make a change.
There are many situations in life where a rebellion is required for improvement. For instance, the Stono Rebellion, Pontiac’s War, Shay’s Rebellion, and Bacon’s Rebellion all had the same idea in common, they all wanted change. They all wanted to improve America’s society. The tactic in each rebellion was different, the motives were different, and not all the outcomes were successful. All of these rebellions also had unobvious internal struggles which either weaken or strengthen them. It is likely that Bacon’s Rebellion could have been avoided because it did not leave a positive impact on America’s society. Although, if the Stono Rebellion, Pontiac’s war, and Shay’s Rebellion never occurred the government would not be
This suggests that they had negative relations with the government and authorities because their voices were not being listened to and they weren’t equally represented in the government’s policy decisions. Riot was a tactic employed to get their voices heard but there was a fine line between being listened to and retribution for their actions. For example, before the Oxfordshire rising in 1596, the people of Oxfordshire appealed to Lord Norris and other members of authority to help resolve the issue of dearth in the area. However, Lord Norris did little to help improve the situation and further appeals took place until the rebels resulted to riot in the hope of change. However, the rising against enclosure largely failed due to the lack of support, as only a handful of men turned up to support the rebels cause. Additionally, what gave rebellions the scale and force they had, such as the Pilgrimage of Grace, was the combination of supressed local grievances which had built up over time as they had not been effectively dealt with. For example, if someone heard a rumour about a potential uprising they may have become involved to express their personal grievances which may have been repressed in the past but had not achieved the outcome the rebels wanted. The youth of the 1950s were built off of their rebellious personalities, their sense of morality, and the metaphorical phrase of being rebirthed. This is best shown in the film Rebel Without a Cause, where teens are seen running away from their parents and getting involved in stuff they shouldn’t be. The reasons why teens were depicted as rebels against conformity was because of how youth culture formed, such as the growth of cars, being involved with love, and forming gangs within their group of friends. When comparing 50s kids to today’s kids, it can be seen that the generation’s culture is drastically different. The biggest goal for parents today are to wipe out the source of rebellious thoughts, and keep strict conformity amongst their family so it would not cause society’s downfall.
Over the centuries, some leaders have believed that private citizens should rebel against injustice in a non-violent rebellion. These leaders have had courage and passion to start or encourage revelations; they have committed acts of civil disobedience to protest these laws put up by a corrupt government. The leaders were willing to give up their lives or freedom because their conscience would not let them rest and accept the unjust laws. Some of these leaders include Henry David Thoreau, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Malala Yousafzai.
The rebellion arose after white frontiersmen were given land following their servitude. When the whites traveled west from Jamestown to proclaim their land they encountered Indians. Virginians went to their colony’s government, but the government did nothing.
In 1776, British colonists in the Americas were provoked to rebel by the parliamentary revenue system, British military actions toward the colonies, and the legacy of colonial beliefs and governmental philosophies.
Just the pure idea of them being in the New World and not under the thumb and hammer of the religious institutions of the Old World made them rebellious in the first place. The pilgrims who crossed the pond were dissenters to begin with. The fuel and fire for revolution was in the hearts of the colonies before the idea of becoming a new nation was even a thought. Indeed there were business ventures to be had in the New World. The idea for prospecting for new agriculture and profits is always a means for colonization, but the cause for the pilgrims where that of a religious reason. They wanted to practice the rites and customs of their faith without persecution from the Church of England. To do so, they decided to pack-up and head west towards a new land for a new beginning.
Through my research and findings of obedience to authority this ancient dilemma is somewhat confusing but needs understanding. Problem with obedience to authority has raised a question to why people obey or disobey and if there are any right time to obey or not to obey. Through observation of many standpoints on obedience and disobedience to authority, and determined through detailed examination conducted by Milgram “The Perils Of Obedience,” Doris Lessing “Group Minds” and Shirley Jackson “The Lottery”. We have to examine this information in hopes of understanding or at least be able to draw our own theories that can be supported and proven on this subject.
Introduction Individuals often yield to conformity when they are forced to discard their individual freedom in order to benefit the larger group. Despite the fact that it is important to obey the authority, obeying the authority can sometimes be hazardous, especially when morals and autonomous thought are suppressed to an extent that the other person is harmed. Obedience usually involves doing what a rule or a person tells you to, but negative consequences can result from displaying obedience to authority; for example, the people who obeyed the orders of Adolph Hitler ended up killing innocent people during the Holocaust. In the same way, Stanley Milgram noted in his article ‘Perils of Obedience’ of how individuals obeyed authority and neglected their conscience, reflecting how this can be destructive in real life experiences. On the contrary, Diana Baumrind pointed out in her article ‘Review of Stanley Milgram’s Experiments on Obedience’ that the experiments were not valid, hence useless.
Obedience and disobedience play a huge role in our lives as humans. We begin with disobedience. With that, though, we develop the ability to choose to obey or disobey. In doing this, we obey the highest calling that we must: human nature. No matter how we modernize as a society, the primal instincts and decisions that rise up in every human being are very much the same as they have always been.
As far back as we have the ability to look, it seems that figures in humanity have always been fighting against conformity, against submission, against resignation. It is in our nature as humans to strive to do what we believe to be the best and for many, this comes in the form of non-conformity or rebellion. Many authors over time have wrestled with this subject, from Henry David Thoreau with the government to Quincy Troupe with the educational system. The educational system is a very important factor in the idea of conformity as it is mandatory and strict and monotonous; basically a plethora of words that come to mind when one thinks of "conformity" and "obedience". Why is it that in such a fast paced, ever-changing world most of us regard those who choose not to conform; the "hippies", the "mavericks", "bohemians", the "vagabonds", and "vagrants", with an air of arrogance?
Authority cannot exist without obedience. Society is built on this small, but important concept. Without authority and its required obedience, there would only be anarchy and chaos. But how much is too much, or too little? There is a fine line between following blindly and irrational refusal to obey those in a meaningful position of authority. Obedience to authority is a real and powerful force that should be understood and respected in order to handle each situation in the best possible manner.
Furthermore, this causes infliction between teenagers and adults, especially their parents. Once they have the courage of saying “no” with consciousness to what they are ordered to do, they come across a feeling, a feeling of being big and powerful. Because of that, teenagers then only focuses on their new discovery of rebelling against adults and are, metaphorically speaking, injected with ego. Adding on to that, when we were kids, we would say no but we said the word unconsciously. We haven’t fully understood the term rebel that is portrayed through our actions. Now, I am not saying that everyone is like this when they were teenagers but I am certain that everyone has said no to their parents or an elder at least once.
As we all have observed, throughout history each culture or society has unique norms that are acceptable to that group of people. Therefore, to establish and come to the acceptance of these basic norms, each society must develop its’ own strategies and techniques to encourage the fundamentals of behavior, which is clear in our modern society. Most do assume that everyone in a society will follow and respect such norms. However, some tend to deviate from the adequate norms and demonstrate deviant behavior. Nevertheless, we are inclined to ask ourselves, why do people decide to violate such important standards of living?
