Why Did The South Lose The Civil War? The primary reason why the South lost the Civil War was because of their insistence upon retaining democratic liberties during wartime. The Union’s victory was then achieved because of their ability to suppress certain liberties for the greater good of the people. The Southern soldiers were disobedient and overconfident because the little guy had been able to achieve amazing victories in previous wars. The South kept freedom of speech and allowed news papers to slander the South and publicize their military plans and strategies. Jefferson Davis also did not play politics while Lincoln did, allowing Lincoln to gain support and guarantee he would win the upcoming presidential election. The South kept certain liberties because they were undisciplined that the North was willing to temporarily suspend to win the war. In the military, the Southern soldiers viewed themselves as temporarily aiding the cause of succession. “Like all American soldiers in all wars, the Confederate disliked military discipline” because they believed it infringed on their upon their individual …show more content…

The South never infringed upon freedom of speech or suppressed newspapers regardless of their content. “This revolution may be...closed without suppression of one single newspaper in the Confederate states.” (Died of Democracy) The South allowed newspaper to slander the cause for secession and published their military plans that the North had access to. They preserved writs of habeas corpus and due process of law. And they were unable to prevent disloyalty in the citizens.The Union revoked certain liberties and suspended the writ of habeas corpus.
